85.  Stretch out dynamically every morning.  Dynamic stretching is much more important than static stretching.

82.  Drink your supplements daily - fish oil, glucosamine chondroitin, multi vitamins, BCAAs, recovery drinks (after a workout) and protein shakes.

81.  Sleep 8 hours a day.  The body needs to rest in order to recover so that you can perform to the best of your abilities during training.

78.  Attend as many seminars as you can to grow and learn.  Learning one new technique is worth a seminar, especially if it sticks and becomes your own.

76.  Take 1 day off a week and unwind.

75.  Get a massage as often as you can so that you can keep your body lactic acid-free and limber.

74.  Do some boxing drills such as simultaneous jab counters, parry counters, and other cool drills with a partner to improve your speed and timing.

72.  Throw 50 kicks with each leg into a heavy bag every day after practice.  It builds up your power and your bone density.

71.  Subscribe to Evolve University, the largest world championship online university for martial arts.   Learn and review the video tutorials by world champions every day.  Or you can also just buy tons of training DVDs from the world's best experts in all disciplines.

70.  Mix up your cardio workouts - high intensity versus low intensity, anaerobic versus aerobic

69.  Shock your body by doing different sports that your muscles are not used to

68.  Remember that MMA (BJJ, Muay Thai, Boxing, and Wrestling) is a lifestyle if you really want to receive all the benefits of the discipline.

67.  Don't smoke.  Quit if you do.

66.  Drink alcohol in moderation.  Or don't drink at all.

65.  Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.  A fully hydrated body is needed to optimize performance.

64.  Master the basics of Muay Thai, BJJ, Boxing, and Wrestling.

63.  Learn the transition game or how to weave seamlessly between the 4 disciplines.

62.  Train combinations that utilize all 4 disciplines (ie.  low leg kick, right cross, double leg takedown, side control, mount, armbar)

61.  Take private lessons with a qualified instructor.  You can have your bad habits eliminated.

60.  Buy the best books in each discipline and read like a mad man.

59.  Skip rope for 30 minutes straight on a regular basis.  It builds your calf muscles and shoulders for more explosive striking.

58.  Do circuit training with stations of TRX, weights, heavy bag work, sprints, tire jumping, and rope climbing to improve your cardiovascular performance.

57.  Find a group of training partners at your level and motivate each other to prevent slacking or skipping class.

56.  Watch UFCONE FC, Bellator, and all the other top MMA shows on TV a regular basis.  It will keep you fired up, but also you will learn a lot.

55.  Visit SherdogMMA WeeklyMMA Junkie, and Middle Easy daily to get your information dose of MMA.

54.  Take training vacations.  Fly to Thailand to train a month in Muay Thai.  Fly to Brazil to train a month of BJJ.  Go to the source of each discipline and absorb everything.

53.  Put up a blog and chronicle your journey towards greatness.  Nothing helps more than being public with your successes and failures.

52.  Make a wish list of the top academies that you would like to visit to train.

51.  Visit them!

50.  Subscribe to magazines like Fight!, Fighters Only, Gracie Magazine, Grappling, and FightSport to stay on the cutting edge of news, tips, and techniques.

49.  Practice your 3 favorite submissions every day by drilling them 50 times each with your partner

48.  Practice your 3 favorite striking combinations and drill them with someone holding the Thai pads for you for 5 minutes per round.

47.  Shock your body by breaking out of your routine and doing something completely different like rock climbing, yoga, or gymnastics.

46.  Treat your balance as yet another skill to master.  To achieve great balance, sharpen it by spending 15 minutes every other day to do balance drills like squats on a wooden board with a ball underneath it or by trying to stand on a Swiss ball while punching combos in the air.

45.  Deprive yourself.  Take a week off every now and then to let your body and mind recharge.  Nothing is better for you than getting the hunger back for training.

44.  Practice yoga 1-2x a week to improve your breathing, concentration, and flexibility.

43.  Do isolation drills on the ground by starting off in an inferior position with your partner and try your best to reverse the position.

42.  Practice ground and pound with a heavy bag on the ground.  Max out for 5 minutes for 3 rounds and be sure to change up positions from side control to mount to knee on belly, etc.

41.  Invest in the best equipment that money can buy.  When it comes to safety protective gear like gloves, headgear, mouthpieces, cups, etc, spend the most that you can.  It will keep you safe (or safer) and help to minimize the risk of injury.

40.  If you accidentally get hurt, practice RICE.  Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.  To minimize injury, use these steps right to prevent swelling and to speed up recovery time.

39.  Switch stances to shock your mind and body.  If you like to stand in a right handed stance (orthodox), then switch it up and try to learn to stand in a left-handed stance (southpaw).  If you can learn to switch it up, it will help your game.

38.  Keep working through plateaus.  If you find yourself frustrated because you have been at the same level for a while, do not quit.  Consistency is the key to success.  The turtle does win the race.

37.  Visualize greatness.  Even if you do not necessarily compete, visualize the moments when you feel the best at training or sparring.  Think back to how you feel on those highs.

36.  Train your mind to be able to get back to those highs.  The mind drives the body.  If your mental state is in peak performance state, your body will respond.

35.  Feel the need for speed.  Speed matters a lot in the sport of MMA.  If you want to develop faster strikes, practice with a speed ball.  Don't focus on power.  Just focus on pure speed.  Do it at least every day for 5 minutes and you will see results.

34.  The need for speed also applies to the ground game.  Drill the intricate details of the arm bar 50 times after a class.  Your muscles will start to memorize the move and you will be able to do it fast in your sleep.

33.  Teach someone who is less skilled than you.  When you teach someone, you actually end up learning a lot because it forces you to review all the details of every technique.  It also end up being a forum of questions and answers that open your mind.

32.  Dedicate a whole week to the ground game only.  Instead of alternating or doing both striking and ground, focus on 1 area on a given random week.

31.  Dedicate a whole week to the standup game only.  Instead of alternating or doing both striking and ground, focus on 1 area on a given random week.

30.  Learn to use your hips.  Your hips are the key to power for striking and they are also the key to your ground game.

29.  Compete.  It does not matter whether you just do MMA for fun or if you are a professional fighter.  When you compete, you learn to use all aspects of your game in a live setting.  Adrenaline, pressure, and fatigue are all great elements to deal with.

28.  Compete often.  Fighting (or self-defense) is 99% mental.  Even if you have all the tools in the world, but you have a weak mental game, you will fail.  The best way to strengthen your mind is to compete.

27.  Tap often.  There are no heroes in the gym.  Training is about learning.  Leave your ego at the door when you are training.  It is far better to tap 1000x than to have your arm broken 1x.

26.  Lower the volume often.  If you are sparring Muay Thai, learn to spar lightly so that you don't injure your partner.  Controlled sparring is a time to work on new combinations and footwork.

25.  Spar hard once in a while.  If you are a serious MMA athlete, you will need to spar hard to understand the intricacies of speed, power, pain, and more.  Even if you are not serious, you should try to spar hard at least 1x a month.

24.  Do not spar hard often.  If you spar hard often, you will inevitably get injured (or injure your partner).  Injuries are the things that slow your progress down because it puts you out of the game for a long time.

23.  Variety is the key.  It is easy to get stuck in a rut.  If you repeat the same thing over and over, it will get boring.  To keep things interesting, do not have a routine (if you are not competing).  If you are doing MMA for fun, then the idea is to keep it fun.

22.  Buy some excellent running shoes.

21.  Use the Gi when doing BJJ.  Even though many MMA athletes train solely without the gi, top MMA athletes use the Gi like GSP, Anderson Silva, BJ Penn, Kenny Florian, and others.

20.  Invest in 2 great Gis for BJJ

19.  Stay on top of informative fight blogs such as mymuaythai.com and evolve-mma.blogspot.com

18.  Buy cool training apparel.  MMA is a lifestyle, an attitude, and a way to express yourself.  So whether it is that cool Affliction shirt you have been eying or that awesome pair of fight shorts you've always wanted, buy them.  It might not help you fight better, but it will keep you inspired to train.

17.  Go to a live UFC event.  There is nothing more electrifying than a big fight.  The adrenaline, the excitement, the energy.  It will give you a high for days and you will train like a madman afterwards.

16.  Drink green tea and eat a banana 30 minutes before you train.  It takes 30 minutes for caffeine and taurine to take full effect.

15.  Invest in your role models.  If your favorite fighter is Anderson Silva, buy his DVDs and learn all his little tricks.  If you love BJ Penn's game, buy his books.  It is important to have role models to learn from.  It helps to accelerate your learning.

14.  Make SAFETY your #1 priority.  When you train, you should always make sure that safety (your safety and your partner's safety) is the #1 priority.  If you get injured, it takes you out of the game of training.  If you injure a few partners, no one will want to train with you.

13.  Train with different sizes.  Train with people smaller than you.  Train with skinny tall people.  Train with big linebacker types.  Train with all sizes and learn to adjust your game.  The experience itself is worth its weight in gold.

12.  Find the best teachers possible.  Surround yourself with the best.  If you are learning Muay Thai, make sure your instructor has deep experience in Muay Thai.  If you are learning BJJ, make sure your instructor has deep experience in BJJ.

11.  Keep your gym bag stocked with all the necessities at all times.  Extra clothes, muscle ointment, band aids, athletic tape, painkillers, a cup, a mouthpiece, handwraps, gloves, running shoes, protein shake packets, etc.  You never know when you will need them.

10.  On your days off, be sure to cheat.  Eat anything you want.  Do anything you want.  But don't do anything that has to do with MMA.  Keep your love for MMA fresh.  You'll train harder.

9.  Set goals.  If you set mini goals, it will help you to stay on the path to unleashing your potential.  If you are a blue belt in BJJ, focus on the next stripe before you focus on the purple belt.  If you are a beginner in Muay Thai, focus on mastering the Thai clinch.  MMA is a mountain and you need to set little goals to climb it.

8.  Accept roadblocks.  There will always be training plateaus or injuries or a bad training partner to prevent you from wanting to train.  It is a natural part of life.  Go with the flow.  Don't fight it.

7.  Don't accept roadblocks for too long.  If you are injured, rest.  If you are frustrated, go do something to get your mind off it.  Don't stay out of the game too long or else you will completely lose momentum.

6.  Learn to workout with kettlebells.  Kettlebells are a great way to build your entire body.  Take some kettlebell classes and see the results.

5.  Take a Strength and Conditioning class 2-3x a week to help boost your fitness.

4.  Train with people you love.  If you train with friends, it makes it more fun.  You don't have to worry about getting hurt and you will both be focused on your favorite sport in the world.

3.  Jump tires.  Find an old tire of a car.  Lay it flat on the ground.  Start bouncing on it.  After a few minutes, you will feel your calves burn and your heart pound away.  Tire jumping is a great way to warm up and to develop your calf muscles for explosive movement.

2.  Remember that it is a journey!  There is no destination.  MMA is about constantly evolving yourself and always improving.  Always go back to why you are doing it in the first place.  Because it is FUN.  And because you LOVE it.

1.  Keep EVOLVING!!!

Where There Is Life, There Is Hope

The story of Natalie du Toit is one of hope and perseverance in the face of great obstacles. At the young age of 14 Natalie had established herself as a fast rising star in international competitive swimming. However, just three years later as Natalie was preparing to qualify for the 2001 Summer Olympics tragedy struck. While driving home from practice she was involved in a horrible traffic accident that resulted in the amputation of one of her legs. Although she was only 17 years old it appeared that Natalie’s dream of competing in the Olympics was over. Yet, despite what every else around her believed, Natalie refused to accept this fate. Just over three months after losing her leg Natalie was back in the pool swimming. She was nowhere near the same swimmer she had been, but she continued to chase her dream. Three years later in 2004 she attempted to qualify for the Summer Olympics in Athens. Although she was close, she fell short of qualifying. The fact that she was able to get as close as she did was a remarkable feat in and of itself. No one ever expected her to come so far with only one leg. Natalie, however, had different expectations. She believed she could qualify for the Olympics, and would not rest until she had. Finally, in 2008, seven years after losing her leg, Natalie realized her dream and qualified for the Summer Olympics in Beijing. This is a true story about the remarkable power of hope and perseverance. Great obstacles on the path to dreams are inevitable. Yet, as long as we never lose our hope and continue to persevere there are no obstacles that cannot be overcome. Check out the video below to hear Natalie recount her story.

The Magic of Cinnamon

Cinnamon is one of the world’s oldest known spices.  Dating back to 2000 BC, Arab merchants from India were trading in cinnamon with Ancient Egyptian and Chinese societies.  It was praised and adopted by these ancient cultures for both its culinary and medicinal uses.  Fast forward to the present and cinnamon has spread it reach to every corner of the globe.  Although still predominantly cultivated in Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern regions, cinnamon has found its way on to just about every spice rack around the world and with good reason.  It turns out that in addition to its wide range of great tasting culinary uses, cinnamon may also have a wide range of health benefits.  A growing body of research is beginning to confirm that the ancient societies, which used cinnamon as a natural medicine, may have been on to something.  Let’s take a look at a few of the major health benefits attributed to one of the world’s oldest spices.

Blood Sugar Levels
Recent studies have shown that cinnamon is very effective in regulating the body’s blood sugar levels, particularly for those with type 2 diabetes.  In a study completed by doctors in Germany it was found that daily consumption of 1 gram of cinnamon was effective in lowering the blood sugar levels of type 2 diabetics.  In addition to benefiting diabetics, cinnamon’s regulatory effects on blood sugar levels may also prove useful for maintaining stable energy levels throughout the day.  This will also help control food cravings and assist in weight loss.

Cholesterol
According to studies, regular consumption of cinnamon may be effective in lowering levels of LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol, otherwise known as the “bad cholesterol”.  This could be good news for those at risk of cardiovascular disease.

Antibacterial and Antifungal Properties
The scientific studies on this are still in the very early stages, but cinnamon has been used for its antibacterial and antifungal properties since ancient times. While preliminary studies have been able to confirm that cinnamon is able to kill a variety of bacteria and fungi in a laboratory setting, large scale clinical studies have yet to be carried out to confirm this on the human body.

In addition to these primary benefits, cinnamon has also been linked with high levels of cancer fighting antioxidants, arthritis relief, and cognitive enhancement.  It is also a great source of calcium, iron, and fiber.  With so many potential health benefits and great tasting uses there is no reason not to spice up your diet with a little cinnamon.  Although it should be noted that none of the studies conducted thus far are conclusive, there is certainly enough evidence to make it worth trying.  Why not try sprinkling some cinnamon on your morning bowl of cereal, or instead of reaching for the sugar with your next cup of coffee try using some cinnamon instead.  There are many great tasting ways to add cinnamon to your diet, and the potential health benefits make it worth the effort.

Overcoming Injury

For anyone participating in sports or pursuing an active lifestyle injuries are inevitable. Whether you are an elite level professional athlete or a middle-aged weekend warrior, it is likely you have dealt with injuries, and if you continue to remain active you will certainly deal with many more. Fortunately, there are very few injuries that cannot be overcome with a positive attitude and a little determination. All too often people succumb to what are relatively minor injuries and resign themselves to sedentary lifestyles. Injuries are no fun and some are much more serious than others, but they are very rarely permanent. If you are plagued with chronic back pain, a broken bone, or torn ligaments there are steps you can take to completely rehabilitate yourself and safely continue participating in the activities that keep you healthy and happy. The human body is incredibly resilient and every day people defy the odds to overcome serious injury. So before you throw in the towel and give up something you enjoy due to injury, let’s take a look at a few real life examples of people overcoming injury.

Frank Mir
In June of 2004 Frank Mir was sitting atop the mixed martial arts world. At only 25 years old, Mir had just defeated Tim Sylvia to earn the UFC Heavyweight belt. His future in MMA was looking bright. However, just 4 months after winning the belt things took an unexpected turn. Mir was involved in a terrible motorcycle accident that shattered his leg in two places and tore every ligament in his knee. The injuries required multiple major surgeries, and everyone, including Mir himself, was left wondering if would ever step foot in the UFC octagon again. Nearly a year later, and still unable to compete, Mir was stripped of his belt by the UFC. Fortunately, Frank Mir did not give up, and after a tortuous 17 months of rehabilitation he finally returned to the UFC. Although he struggled in his first few comeback fights, Mir has recently reestablished himself as one of the top heavyweights in the world. On May 26th he will be fighting Junior Dos Santos for the UFC Heavyweight belt.

Kaka
Kaka is widely recognized as one of the greatest football players in the world today. He played on the 2002 World Cup winning Brazilian national team, and was awarded the prestigious Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year in 2007. Yet, when Kaka was 18 years old he suffered a severe spinal injury that threatened to not only end his athletic career but completely paralyze him. The doctors told the 18 year old Kaka to be grateful he was not fully paralyzed and except that he would probably never play football at a high level again. Kaka ignored the doctors and in what has been described as nothing short of a “miracle” made a full recovery from the injury in under a year.

Bethany Hamilton
At the age of 13, while out surfing the waves of Hawaii with her friends, Bethany Hamilton was the victim of a brutal shark attack. The shark ripped Bethany’s entire left arm from her body and nearly took her life as she lost 60% of the blood in her body before arriving to a hospital. After losing her arm and narrowly surviving such a traumatic event you might think Bethany would never go near a surfboard again. Certainly, she would not be able to become a professional surfer. Yet, surfing was Bethany’s dream, and she was determined to let nothing get in her way. Less than 1 month after losing her arm she was back on her surfboard riding waves. She is now 22 years old and a fast rising star in the world of women’s professional surfing.

Although these three stories are remarkable, they are by no means unique. Everyday people are inflicted with all manner of injuries, and everyday people overcome these injuries. Do not let your latest injury become an excuse to give up an active lifestyle. Instead, educate yourself on what needs to be done to recover, and set your mind to getting it done.

How to Build Explosive Power

Hindu Squats are an excellent bodyweight exercise that can be performed anywhere, and have tremendous strength and conditioning benefits. Also known as Bethaks, this variation on the traditional squat is believed to have originated in ancient India, and was used as one of the primary strength and conditioning exercises among some of the great Indian wrestlers. According to legend, Ghulam Muhammad, better known as The Great Gama, performed 500 Hindu Squats daily as part of his strength and conditioning program. To this day, The Great Gama is considered to be the greatest wrestler who ever lived, remaining undefeated through his entire career, which spanned nearly 50 years and 5,000 matches. In recent times, the Hindu Squat has grown particularly popular among those training in combat sports due to its dual benefits of explosive lower body power and incredible endurance building. Although they may look simple, try doing 100 in a row and you will quickly understand why they build such explosive power and endurance. Like any exercise, these benefits only apply if the exercise is performed correctly. Here is how they are done with some details:

  • With your feet set shoulder width apart extend your arms out from your chest parallel to the floor.
  • Breathe in deeply and begin to pull your arms back towards your chest, as if rowing a boat.
  • Keeping a straight back and good posture, begin squatting down as you simultaneously extend your arms downward and behind you in a swinging motion. Exhale out as you are moving downwards.
  • As you are squatting down raise your heels and come up on your toes.
  • Once your butt has reached the bottom of the movement, nearly touching your heels, push upward through your toes while swinging your arms forward and out.
  • Return to standing position with arms extended out from chest.
  • Breathing: inhale as you pull your arms in at the top of the motion and exhale as you lower your body. This goes against traditional breathing techniques used for squats.
  • Always keep your back as straight as possible throughout the entire movement.

Don’t expect to be able to keep up with The Great Gama’s 500 Hindu Squats a day right away. Start slowly, and work your way up in repetitions. Focus first on developing correct form and technique, and then begin to increase the speed and number of repetitions. For a visual demonstration of the Hindu Squat check out the below video by world-renowned fitness coach and Gracie Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Steve Maxwell.

Success Through Failure

Out of great failures arise great successes. Take a look at some of the most successful people in life, and you will no doubt find that most of them have failed many more times than they have ever succeeded. Failure is difficult to swallow, but it is also inevitable in order to succeed greatly at anything. For those who do not crumble in the face of failure, success is often just around the corner. Check out this video of Michael Jordan who failed many more times than he ever succeeded, and yet is widely considered to be the greatest basketball player to ever play the game. Remember that by daring greatly and failing greatly you are setting yourself up to succeed greatly.

Frankie Edgar does 100 pushups in 2 minutes

If you need some motivation check out this video of UFC superstar Frankie Edgar completing a push up challenge. Frankie is able to do 100 pushups in just over 2 minutes. How long does it take you to complete 100 pushups?

Trying to keep up with the latest trends and fads in the fitness industry can be a full time job these days, and a stroll through a modern fitness centre is often like a trip to another planet. Some of the new high tech, space age equipment looks as if it would require an engineer to operate. Unless you are a professional athlete or have a lot of free time this can be quite an overwhelming experience. While there is no doubt these high tech machines can serve a purpose, it can often be just as effective to keep it simple and stick to the basics. For those who are training in martial arts and looking to do some supplementary strength training often times a much simpler work out will suffice.

One of the most underrated, underused, and yet incredibly effective exercises is the old fashioned pushup. Pushups work out almost all the muscles in the upper body and core, and can be performed anywhere at anytime. If you get bored with the standard pushup, there are around 100 pushup variations that can be mixed in. For those who are pressed for time and looking to get in a quick workout, pushups are your best friend. Just because it is simple doesn’t mean it isn’t every bit as effective as the most high tech machine on the market.

Take Nothing for Granted

“There is nothing you can take for granted, not a single day, not a single minute, not one relationship...”
 - Brian Stann, Iraqi War Veteran and UFC Middleweight Contender

As a decorated war veteran and accomplished UFC middleweight, Brian Stann knows a thing or two about living in the moment and being truly grateful for life. During his time as an infantry soldier for the U.S. Marine Corps Brian witnessed some truly horrifying events, and through his demonstration of valor and courage under fire earned himself the title of “Hero”. Yet, as Brian points out, he doesn’t consider himself a hero and isn’t one to go around pounding his chest in pride. Instead, he has been humbled by the experience, and learned that you can never take anything in life for granted. Brian’s story should serve as a strong reminder to us all that when things are going bad and we are feeling down we need to take a step back and put a little perspective on it. Most of the time our problems are quite trivial and silly when viewed from the bigger picture.

Is Coffee Healthy For You?

How many coffee drinkers out there have ever asked themselves, “How much coffee is too much?” The first cup always goes down so quick, and before long the craving for a second or maybe even third cup of coffee is creeping up. Feeling a little drowsy after that nice big lunch and suddenly coffee starts screaming your name. We all know why we drink coffee. Coffee has caffeine and caffeine gives us energy. Caffeine is also addictive, and that is why for many the thought of facing a morning without coffee is unbearable. There are also ritualistic aspects of coffee. Many people simply enjoy the daily ritual of a cup of coffee with their morning news or over conversation with friends. Yet, almost all coffee drinkers at some point begin to think about cutting back or wondering whether their coffee habit is becoming detrimental to their health. The debate over coffee’s health benefits or lack thereof is a seemingly never-ending flow of contradictions. While one health expert will advise against drinking any, another will advocate drinking it in moderation, and yet another will praise its many benefits. So what is the truth about coffee? Can we give in to our urges and indulge in yet another cup, or should we protect our health and abstain? Fortunately for coffee drinkers, a growing body a research is starting to show that coffee when used in moderation can have significant health benefits. Let’s take a quick look at what the studies have found in response to some of the most common questions surrounding coffee.

How many cups of coffee can I safely drink a day?

A study completed by the Harvard School of Public Health has found that we can safely consume up to 6 cups of coffee a day without increasing our risk of death from any cause. It is important to note that in this study a cup of coffee is considered to be 8 ounces with 100mg of caffeine. As a point of comparison, a Grande size coffee from Starbucks is 16 ounces with around 330mg of caffeine. So while it seems that we can safely consume quite a lot of coffee a day, we should also be aware that there are short term side effects to drinking too much coffee. Depending on individual tolerance for caffeine, coffee can aggravate insomnia, increase anxiety, and cause irritability. As a good rule of thumb, if you are drinking so much coffee that you are feeling stressed, irritable, experiencing tremors or having trouble sleeping then you are drinking too much coffee. Remember that the caffeine in coffee is addictive, and should be consumed in moderation and as needed.

Are there any benefits to my health from drinking coffee?

Yes, according to the Harvard study and many other recent studies, coffee may be very beneficial in preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, liver cancer, and liver cirrhosis. Even more surprising though, is that the studies have actually found that regular coffee drinkers are at a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease than non-coffee drinkers. Although there is still more research to be done, it is becoming more and more evident that coffee is more than just a means for caffeine delivery. The non-caffeine elements of coffee are proving to be very rich in antioxidants. This is great news for coffee drinkers, but it is important to remember that these studies are not yet definitive and that research is still underway to further prove these benefits.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t be drinking coffee?

Although somewhat controversial there have been quite a few studies that indicate high intakes of coffee during pregnancy may increase the risk of miscarriage. Once again, these studies are not definitive, but it is a risk that needs to be seriously considered. What is known for certain is that caffeine reaches the fetus, which is very sensitive to caffeine. There have also been some debates over whether those with high blood pressure should be drinking coffee. Studies have not found any indication that coffee consumption increases any of the risks associated with high blood pressure or further contributes to its cause. It may nonetheless be wise to exercise moderation when consuming coffee in this situation.

In summary, it seems that drinking coffee is not nearly as harmful as is often suggested, and quite possibly a lot more beneficial. For those who truly enjoy their coffee, it is safe to keep on drinking it. If you are trying to adopt a healthier lifestyle, focus your attention on eating better and increasing physical activity. Also, remember that coffee as discussed here means black coffee, not a Starbucks Frappuccino. Start adding large amounts of milk and sugar to your coffee and you will quickly outweigh any of the positive health benefits with negative ones. It is the pure coffee that offers the health benefits, and in terms of caffeinated beverages it is fair to say that coffee is one of the healthier choices out there.

Enjoy the Journey

Sometimes we get so caught up focusing on our end goals and destinations in life that we forget to enjoy the present and embrace the journey. While everyone should have a destination in life, it is the journey that should be savored and enjoyed. 19th century Greek poet C.P. Cavafy encapsulates this ideal beautifully in his classic work Ithaka. As we each pursue our own personal Ithaka's always remember to enjoy the experiences along the way that make life worth living.

Ithaka

As you set out for Ithaka
hope the voyage is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.

Hope the voyage is a long one.

May there be many a summer morning when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you come into harbors seen for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind—
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to gather stores of knowledge from their scholars.

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.

Arriving there is what you are destined for.
But do not hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you are old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you have gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.

Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you would not have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.

And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you will have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.

The Importance of Water

Staying properly hydrated is the simplest, easiest, and cheapest part of maintaining good health during training, and yet it is one of the most commonly neglected. Many people are not drinking anywhere near as much water before, after, and during training as they should be and as a result their performance suffers. In order for our bodies to operate and recover properly it is absolutely critical that we are fully hydrated. Among many other important functions, water acts as a lubricant for our joints, regulates our body temperatures, balances electrolyte concentrations, and plays a key role in stamina and endurance. If our bodies are not properly hydrated we are also putting ourselves at significantly higher risk of injury.

So how much water should we be drinking?

As a very general guideline we should all be drinking at least 8 glasses (1 glass = 8 ounces) of water a day. However, those who are training intensely may need significantly more than that in order to replenish water lost in training. It is very important that we take into account factors such as sweat rate, heat, training intensity and duration. Also remember that just because you aren’t thirsty does not mean you are properly hydrated. To get a better idea of how much water you should be drinking while training check out these guidelines for water intake provided by the American Council on Fitness:

Drink 17 to 20 ounces of water 2 to 3 hours before you start exercising
Drink 8 ounces of water 20 to 30 minutes before you start exercising or during your warm-up
Drink 7 to 10 ounces of water every 10 to 20 minutes during exercise
Drink 8 ounces of water no more than 30 minutes after you exercise
Drink 16 to 24 ounces of water for every pound of body weight you lost after you exercised.

Bear in mind that these are just meant to act as a general guideline, and that each individual may need to adjust the recommended water intake to their bodies and training routines. One of the easiest ways to determine if you are hydrated is to monitor the color of your urine. As a rule of thumb, if the urine is clear or light yellow you are properly hydrated, if the urine is a darker yellow or cloudy you are dehydrated.

In summary, the most important take away here is that we could all probably be drinking more water than we currently do, especially those putting in intense training sessions in a martial art like BJJ or Muay Thai. By keeping ourselves fully hydrated with lots of water we will perform better, feel better, and avoid injuries.

All Foods Are Not Created Equal

Navigating through a supermarket these days is no easy task. From the moment we walk through the door we are confronted with so many options and varieties of products it can be hard to know what to choose. If you’ve come to buy some peanut butter you will likely have a choice of 5 or 6 different brands, styles, blends, and tastes. Make your way over for some cooking oil, a staple in any kitchen, and you could be looking at an entire wall of cooking oils made from things you’ve never even heard of before. Want some milk for your morning coffee? Choose between any of the 20 varieties offered.

For most of us, all of these choices can be overwhelming. The tendency is to just settle for whichever product has been packaged most cleverly, or is currently on sale. After all, it’s just cooking oil, they must all work okay, right? Milk is milk, right? WRONG. Unfortunately, all foods are not created equally, and the choices we make in the supermarket can have a significant impact on our health.

So how can we choose wisely?

For starters, never trust a product’s clever labeling. Words like “all natural”, “light”, or “reduced” sound healthy, but can mean very different things. The only way to truly know what we are getting is to physically pick up the product, turn it around, and read. Take a quick glance at the nutritional facts, but really focus on the ingredients list. As a general rule of thumb, the shorter the ingredients list the better. Products with long ingredient lists filled with words we can’t pronounce are the ones to steer clear of. These words we can’t pronounce are the preservatives and chemicals that are put into the food to increase its shelf life, alter its taste, and coincidentally poison us. It is not always possible, but try to select products that are as close to their natural, whole food state as possible. All those preservatives and chemicals may make for a long lasting, great tasting, economical product, but they do all kinds of weird things to our bodies.

Other times we may actually have to do a little research beforehand in order to better understand the choices before us. Let’s take cooking oil as an example. Most of us have heard about the amazing health benefits of extra virgin olive oil, and they are mostly true. Olive oil is made up of what are called “good fats”, called monounsaturated fats, as opposed to the “bad fats”, called saturated fats. However, what most people are unaware of is that at higher cooking heats most of olive oil’s health benefits are burned off. Even worse, it has been suggested that the chemical decomposition of olive oil at high heats leads to the generation of cancer causing compounds that can be very harmful to our health. Thus, when shopping for cooking oil it is important that we choose a high heat oil. Three excellent choices for cooking oils would be coconut oil, grape seed oil, or peanut oil. All three of these oils can be cooked with at high heats and have great nutritional value.

Unfortunately, eating healthy often requires a great deal of diligence. Yet, if you are willing to put in the time to understand the food you buy, the benefits will be remarkable. Often the healthy choice can be more expensive, but when it comes to you and your family’s health and longevity it is really worth the few extra dollars if you can afford it. Remember, all foods are not created equally, and the choices you make in the supermarket have massive effects on your long term health.

The World’s Biggest Killer

“The World now eats (and dies) like Americans.” – Dean Ornish, M.D.

According to Dr. Dean Ornish, the greatest killer in the world is a bad diet. Yet, the role of diet in our general health rarely seems to get the attention it deserves. This is largely due to a skewed delivery of health care information, and the subsequent ignorance of the general public about the alarming facts of what Dr. Ornish calls the “globalization of illness”.  What are the alarming facts?   Here are a few:

  • In just one generation Asia has gone from having one of the lowest rates of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes to one of the highest.
  • Cardiovascular deaths equal HIV/AIDS deaths in most African countries.
  • Cardiovascular diseases kill more people each year than all other illnesses combined.

Now you may be wondering what these diseases have to do with diet. The answer is everything. Studies have shown that cardiovascular diseases are preventable and reversible for 95% of people just by changing diet and lifestyle. That's right, the most lethal killer in the world today is directly attributable to a poor diet. So what can you do? Make a healthy diet a lifestyle choice. This does not mean torturing yourself with an extreme, impossible to follow diet. Rather, it is about making sensible choices. Try to eliminate processed foods where possible, avoid the quick, easy fast food options, eliminate smoking, and everything else that is obviously terrible for your health. Instead, adopt a diet that is heavy on fruits, vegetables, whole foods, and natural products along with an active lifestyle with regular exercise. Not only will you feel better every day, you will also live a lot longer. If saving yourself isn’t enough motivation, and it should be, Dr. Ornish raises a very interesting point. He observes that by using diet and lifestyle changes to reduce preventable diseases we can then free up resources to dedicate to diseases like HIV, Cancer, Malaria, etc. By adopting a better diet we can not only save ourselves, but also contribute to saving others.

Coconut Water: Nature's Sports Drink

Although coconut water has long been a staple in South East Asian diets, it has only very recently become the focal point of a mass marketing campaign in developed Western markets like the U.S. Courtesy of large businesses looking to cash in on the new breed of health conscious consumers in the U.S., coconut water has been packaged and pushed as nature’s sport drink and the fountain of youth. It has very quickly grown into a multi-millionaire dollar industry, taking a very small slice of the pie traditionally dominated by sports drink kingpins like Gatorade and Vitamin Water. Is coconut water just the latest in a long line of pop health food trends that will crash and burn as soon as the next big thing hits the market, or can we expect to see our favorite superstar athletes on television sipping branded coconut water in the very near future? Let’s first take a look at what coconut water isn’t, and then we will discuss what it is and if you should be drinking it.

What It Isn’t
Unfortunately, coconut water is not the fountain of youth. The companies behind the coconut water mania in the U.S. have marketed it as a cure for diabetes, cancer, hypertension, and even the common hangover. They have dubbed it a “life-enhancer” with anti-aging properties able to prevent strokes and heart problems. While it is not entirely impossible that coconut water can offer some of these miracle benefits there has not yet been any conclusive studies done to prove it. The research is still out, and so I wouldn’t count on coconut water to be your savior after a night of heavy drinking just yet.

What It Is
Coconut water is an all natural, fat free, cholesterol free, low calorie, nutrient rich, hydrating drink filled with electrolytes. The primary nutrient in coconut water is potassium, and the water of a single coconut contains as much potassium as approximately 2 bananas. It is also high in cytokinins, an antioxidant linked with anti-aging and cancer prevention. However, the science is still out on cytokinins so we will just mention that it is in coconut water and hope it turns out to be as beneficial as we think. The one negative of coconut water is the high level of sugar. Yet, when viewed in comparison to the levels of sugary high fructose corn syrup found in most sports drinks, it is actually not too bad. All in all, coconut water is a very healthy drink.

Should I Drink Coconut Water?
Although coconut water may not quite be worthy of the moniker “miracle water”, there is no doubt it contains many great health benefits. When given a choice between sugary soft drinks filled with artificial coloring and preservatives and all natural coconut water, the latter is an infinitely better choice every time. As a post-workout rehydrating drink, coconut water is rich in potassium, one of the main nutrients we are depleted of during strenuous exercise. However, it is also deficient in sodium, the other key nutrient our bodies are depleted of during exercise. You will find that sports recovery drinks like Gatorade have a much higher sodium content. Thus, for the recreational athlete coconut water is a great option, but for the most serious athletes subject to extremely intense workouts coconut water can only be part of the recovery equation. That being said, coconut water is about as close as you can expect to come to nature’s perfect sport drink. It is a great, healthy choice, and an excellent replacement for soft drinks. So the answer is yes, put down the soda, and pick up a coconut water.

Step 1: Get Started!

It sounds so easy, so obvious, but the first step and often the hardest is to get started. We all have goals and things we want to change in our lives, but it can often be easier to put them off until tomorrow or next week or next month when we convince ourselves we will "have more time". The truth is that the timing will never be right unless we make the time right now and get started. Whether its joining the gym, learning a new martial art, losing weight, saving money, or spending more time with family just get started on it TODAY. If you find that you are having trouble getting started on something check out this video from Training For Warrior's Martin Rooney. Martin works with elite MMA fighters like Frankie Edgar, Jim Miller, Gregor and Igor Gracie, and knows a thing or two about motivation and success. As Martin recommends, it is time we stop "getting ready to get ready" and instead "get started".

The Secret to Martial Arts

Strength and conditioning training is a very important supplement for taking your martial arts game to the next level. This is not to say that technique sessions should be sacrificed for strength and conditioning training. Developing technique and actually practicing the martial art is the first and most important piece of the puzzle. This takes absolute precedence over strength and conditioning. You can be the strongest man in the world, but that is completely useless against superior technique. Remember: TECHNIQUE BEATS STRENGTH EVERY TIME. That being said, for those who have the time and are looking to take their martial arts training to the next level, mixing in some strength and conditioning training can be very beneficial. The focus of strength and conditioning training for MMA should be on high intensity functional training. If you aren't sure what this means, check out Evolve MMA's FightShape class. DO NOT waste your time at a traditional gym lifting heavy weights like a bodybuilder. Instead, focus on developing core strength, which plays a critical role in martial arts, or any sport for that matter. As a starting point for building your core strength, try out this intense 10 minute abdominal workout by boxing champion Manny Pacquiao. See how long you can keep up with the Champ, and then start working towards developing the strength and conditioning to complete the full 10 minute workout. Developing this kind of core strength will have tremendous benefits for your martial arts game.

Better Flexibility, Better BJJ, Less Injuries

Spend some time watching or rolling with any of Evolve's BJJ black belts and you will no doubt notice that in addition to their flawless technique and superior conditioning they all have incredible flexibility. They are able to bend and twist their legs into positions that are unimaginable to most people. The dexterity with which a BJJ black belt is able to use his legs matches how most people use their arms. While this high level of flexibility is developed over a lifetime of practicing BJJ, there is no reason beginner or casual BJJ practitioners can't improve their own flexibility with a little bit of work. Not only will you find that your BJJ game is dramatically improved, but with increased flexibility you are also greatly reducing your risk of injury. To get started on improving your flexibility check out this video created by renowned MMA strength and conditioning coach Martin Rooney and 4 time BJJ World Champion Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro. Dedicate 15 minutes of your time everyday to building your flexibility and the benefits will be manifold. As Martin says, "If you want what other people don't have, you must do what other people don't do."
