Conquering Impossible Odds

Back in December of 2011 we told the story of double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorus and his dream to compete at the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games. To refresh your memory, Oscar, nicknamed the “Blade Runner”, had both of his legs amputated below the knee when he was just 11 months old. Despite what would seem to be an unsurpassable barrier to becoming a sprinter, Oscar learned to not just sprint with his prosthetic legs, but to sprint competitively at the highest level in the world. On Wednesday, Oscar’s lifelong dream came true when he was selected for South Africa’s Olympic 1,600 meter relay team. Every one please take a moment to truly reflect on this. A man who had both of his legs amputated at 11 months old grew up to become an Olympic sprinter. What other proof could you ever possibly need to believe that dreams do come true for those who have the guts to chase them? Can you imagine how many people throughout Oscar’s life told him he couldn’t be an Olympic sprinter, laughed at him, or thought he was completely crazy? Yet, today Oscar Pistorus is a proud member of the 2012 South African Olympic team. The first ever amputee track athlete to compete at the Olympic games. Let this story inspire, motivate, and move you. We leave you with Oscar’s personal motto:

“You're not disabled by the disabilities you have, you are able by the abilities you have.”
