American Wrestling At Its Best
This past weekend featured the NCAA Division 1 Wrestling Championships, which is one of the premier showcases of American wrestling talent and undoubtedly the most anticipated event of the year. At this tournament the elite of the elite in collegiate wrestling gather to bang heads and fight for the coveted title of NCAA Division 1 National Champion. The event marks the culmination of a long and grueling competitive season and for many the place were life long dreams are made and broken. Although the sport of wrestling is not mainstream in the Asian region in many places in the U.S. wrestling is a way of life, comparable to what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is to Brazilians and Muay Thai to Thais. Wrestling has also proven itself to be an important discipline in order to compete at the highest levels of MMA. Former NCAA Champions who have gone on to have success in MMA are names like Brock Lesnar, Mark Coleman, Josh Koschek, Phil Davis, and Johnny Hendricks. UFC Legend Randy Couture was a 2-time NCAA runner-up. As the sport of MMA continues to grow in prominence and offers lucrative career opportunities it is quite interesting to watch some of these wrestlers and wonder how long it will be until we start hearing their names in the MMA world. Check out this video of the 133 pound championship match between phenoms Jordan Oliver and Leo Steiber.
