The Triangle Choke That Changed The World
Anyone who follows MMA knows that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most effective disciplines in the sport. Time and time again BJJ practitioners have demonstrated its effectiveness against the highest level of mixed martial artists. Most remarkable, is the ability of BJJ to neutralize massive size differentials between competitors. One of the greatest examples of this occurred at UFC 4 back in 1994, where what many have called "the triangle choke that changed the world" occurred. In a classic David vs. Goliath story, an undersized 170 pound Royce Gracie faced off against the nearly 260 pound Dan "The Beast" Severn. Prior to this fight, the world was only just beginning to appreciate the deadly effectiveness of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. For over 15 minutes, Royce Gracie fought from his back keeping Severn at bay with a strong guard. To the uneducated eyes of the spectators and commentators it appeared that Severn was dominating Gracie and in complete control of the bout. Yet, as the world of MMA now knows, Royce Gracie was in complete control of the fight and exactly where he wanted to be. Biding his time, wearing out the much larger and stronger Severn, Gracie finally struck just after the 15 minute mark. Royce Gracie popped his hips in the air, swung a leg over Severn's head, and locked in a fight finishing triangle choke. Severn tapped out, and mixed martial artists around the world were sent back to the drawing board to reevaluate their games. Check out this video by Rener Gracie, Royce's nephew, which takes us back to UFC 4 and recounts "the triangle choke that changed the world".
