What is Your New Year's Resolution?

History has shown that New Year's Resolutions often fail within the first month of the year. They fail due to a lack of commitment, a lack of desire, and a lack of momentum. One of the key ingredients to positive change is momentum. Once you achieve momentum, the momentum often carries you through weak moments. The best way to achieve momentum is to surround yourself with like-minded people with similar values and to create a daily schedule. (For example, if you surround yourself with people who only want to party every day, then it will be very difficult for you to live a healthy lifestyle). If you surround yourself with positive influences in the same direction of your goals, then you will see positive change occur in your life. Soon enough, you will see that new habits will start to form and you will be on the way to a New You.

So what’s your New Year’s Resolution? There could be a million and one ways to go about setting one, but deciding on which ones suits you best could prove to be very tricky. Some people build a long list for themselves while others stick to only one. Often times, they have a funny way of not being accomplished in the year it’s meant for, but that doesn’t mean we should give up on this useful notion for self-improvement. Below are a few suggestions you might want to add to your own list this coming year.

Stick with a regular training schedule

Take the opportunity of the New Year to better manage your time well so that you can get to do more things effectively in the same amount of time, including training. We all know how important physical activity and training is to our health and all other aspects of our life.

Achieve the next big goal in your profession
Whether it is being an MMA champion or gunning for that promotion you’ve been dying to get, set your sights on your goals and take steps towards achieving it. While it is important to set realistic goals, it is also just as important that those goals aren’t easily attainable to the point where it doesn’t challenge us to grow as human beings. Make sure to consistently follow up on the steps that you have determined to be necessary in achieving your goals, and you will be well on your way towards realizing what you always deemed impossible.

Do everything with a smile
Although this may come across as a silly notion, it is important. Attitude will determine altitude. If you want to climb high, you need to have a positive attitude. Smiling is helpful because it is very hard to have a bad attitude if you are smiling. (For example, try to smile happily while having a big argument. You will see that it is impossible to stay angry.) Our efforts to maintain a positive mindset will show in the kind of work that we produce as a result, along with the way we make those around us feel when they interact with us. Even the dullest activity in the world can be brightened up by one smile, and it goes a long way in helping us learn to enjoy the things that we do.

Earn a higher rank
Set your sights on a higher rank in BJJ, Muay Thai, Boxing, or whatever your favorite martial art is. Talk to higher ranking students and learn from them. Surround yourself with friends of the same rank who have the same goal of a higher rank. Train hard and absorb everything. Stay humble and learn.

Hopefully, these few tips might have sparked off a few resolutions of your own, or at least helped you get motivated for the endless possibilities that the New Year ahead holds for all of us. Let's all take another step towards Achieving Greatness Within! Have a Happy, Happy 2011!
