The Meaning of EVOLVE

"evolve [i'volve] verb: to undergo continuous change, development, and progress"

EVOLVE is a family.   First and foremost, Evolve is a family. Together - students, instructors, and staff - we push each other to become better, we challenge each other to grow, and we inspire each other to be the best that we can be. Our family is strengthened by lifelong friendships born today and forged by the warrior values of excellence, humility, loyalty, courage, integrity, and honor. We come from all walks of life. We come in different shapes and sizes. We come in different colors. And we hail from all parts of the globe like Brazil, Singapore, Thailand, US, Japan, Korea, UK, Canada, Germany, China, India, Pakistan, Russia, Latvia, Venezuela, Indonesia, Spain, Australia, Hong Kong, and many other countries. We are dentists, pilots, students, laborers, world champions, office managers, doctors, administrative assistants, professional fighters, PR executives, oil service engineers, advertising executives, cleaners, immigration officers, investment professionals, video game makers, nurses, entrepreneurs, bankers, logistics specialists, CEOs, and so much more. Yet, we are all one. We are the greatest family of champions in life.

EVOLVE is a way of life.  It is a championship attitude of excellence for those who want to unleash their potential in life. It is in the gym. It is in our workplace. It is in our home. We carry this attitude everywhere we go. It is a passion for continuous self-improvement - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually - forever. It is a philosophy of courage to chase dreams and to defy odds. It is a belief that no matter what life throws our way, we will rise to the occasion and emerge victorious. It is a belief that tough times do not last, but tough people do. It is a belief that life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It is about learning to dance in the rain. Whether it is trying to become a World Champion, a better mother, a loving husband, a CEO, or a good daughter, it is about discovering our own greatness today and beyond. Because greatness has no finish line.

EVOLVE is a journey.  Long ago, our instructors and leaders began their journey as children, learning martial arts under some of the greatest grandmasters in history. They have converged from all over the world to join hands at Evolve to pass along the knowledge and wisdom of martial arts. The journey of martial arts is not about violence or physical intimidation. Martial arts is a journey of self-discovery. It is about pushing the limits - and learning to break through those limits. It is about learning, growing, and then giving back to the world. It is a quest to make the world a better place by becoming everything that we can be as individuals - so that we may give back one day. It is the circle of life.

Frankie Edgar: Organized Chaos

UFC 118 had some very technical fights and highlighted again why MMA is the most exciting sport in the world.  The most impressive and technical fight was how UFC Lightweight World Champion Frankie Edgar completely dominated MMA legend BJ Penn in a strategic chess match.

The most impressive thing about Frankie's performance was the brilliance of his game plan.  Frankie kept his game completely unpredictable and erratic.  This strategy of organized chaos is what caused BJ Penn to freeze up.  In fact, by the middle of the fight, BJ Penn completely forgot his own game plan and simply walked forward, trying to find the perfect punch.  An easy way to tell if a fighter's game plan is gone is if he/she turns into an inactive hunter looking for the perfect bomb.  In Thailand, we call this a broken fighter.  A fighter is broken and lost when he completely forgets everything, but a "hail mary" punch.  Frankie displayed a beautiful arsenal of striking, wrestling, and feints to confuse BJ Penn.  Of course, Frankie demonstrated excellent footwork and speed.  However, the real key to his success was his broken rhythm and unpredictability.  For example, Frankie would throw tons of "fake" jabs with lightning speed, but with no real intent of hitting Penn.  His air jabs were often followed up by real jabs and crosses.  He would then fake a takedown before going for a real takedown.  If he felt any resistance to his takedown attempt, he quickly switched gears to Muay Thai and delivered knee strikes, kicks, and punches at close quarters.  Everyone knows that BJ Penn has great balance and flexibility; as such, it almost impossible to take him down.  Knowing this fact, Frankie decided to flow from strikes to takedown attempts to strikes without skipping a beat.  Before UFC 118, every single one of BJ Penn's opponents would go for the single leg takedown and spend a few minutes holding a leg and trying in vain to take Penn down.  And when they failed to do so, they left themselves open to Penn's strikes the second that they let his leg go.  Frankie did the exact opposite.  Even though he would have Penn's leg, he would let it go immediately (without even trying for a real takedown) and use that split second confusion to launch strikes.  Frankie had some great advice from his coaches to stay unpredictable.  Frankie threw combinations at varying speeds and different angles.  Yes, Frankie is fast.  Speed always kills.  But speed with unpredictability destroys and annihilates.

So what is the key lesson from Frankie Edgar's victory?  The key lesson for every martial artist is to break away from a predictable rhythm.  We are all guilty of using our favorite combinations over and over and over again.  In reality, the key to victory lies in your ability to break your opponent's rhythm.  The easiest way to do so is to stay unpredictable.  It means never throwing the same combination of strikes, takedowns, and submission attempts.  It means constantly adding creative combinations to your game.  It means finding an orthodox way to be unorthodox, using different speeds, crazy angles, and every weapon possible.  If Frankie Edgar and his coaches were scientists, we would be calling them Einsteins right now.  They pulled off some crazy mad scientist stuff and they made it look easy.

Congratulations to Frankie Edgar and his coaches Ricardo Almeida (Renzo Gracie BJJ), Phil Nurse (Muay Thai), and Mark Henry (Boxing)!

Evolve Fighter Profile: Yodsanan Sityodtong

WBA Boxing World Champion Yodsanan Sityodtong from the Evolve Fight Team will be making his professional MMA debut early next year at Martial Combat Fighting Championship.  He is a monster knockout artist with one of the highest knockout ratios in boxing history for any world champion.  Yodsanan has a boxing record of 58 wins against 3 losses with 48 knockouts.  His nickname is "Little Mike Tyson" for his aggressive fighting style and true one punch KO power.  Yodsanan is one of the biggest sports celebrities in Thailand and was recently voted as one of the top 3 Thai professional athletes in history.  In anticipation of his MMA debut, Yodsanan has been training 4 hours per day in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the watchful eye of the Evolve BJJ Instructor Team and an additional 2 hours per day in Muay Thai under the Sityodtong Team in Singapore.

Yodsanan is not taking this transition lightly and he realizes that MMA is far more complex than the sport of boxing with many moving parts.  However, his long-term goal is to become an MMA World Champion in the future.  To his credit, he is currently the fittest fighter on the Evolve Fight Team in terms of cardio fitness.

"Yodsanan is freakishly strong for his size.  He is in superb athletic condition.  I can't imagine anyone under 59 kilos being able to hold him down on the ground for very long.  Once his BJJ technique catches up with his strength, he will be a handful for any professional MMA fighter.  We are working extensively on his positional defense and takedown defense.  Yodsanan is already well-versed in most of the submissions.  His work ethic is incredible.  My personal goal is to make sure that he becomes proficient in BJJ before he steps into the cage.  The rest of his game is on a completely different level.  I feel sorry for any of his MMA opponents at 59 kilos."
-Professor Rafael "Gordinho" Correa, Co-Leader of the Evolve Fight Team

The Power of Sleep

How important is sleep? You might be thinking, "I can get by with only a few hours of sleep. Sure, I'll be a bit tired, but I'll be able to manage." So you carry on working late nights, or gaming until the wee hours of the morning.

Sleep is the time for your body to recover, grow, and rejuvenate.  It is critical to athletic performance.  In fact, studies have shown that sleep and exercise are important physiological variables that are mutually interdependent.  They are also influenced by the body clock that drives the sleep-wake cycle. Exercise has been shown to have an impact on subsequent sleep; it is for this reason that athletes are long sleepers. They tend to fall asleep quicker and stay asleep longer. Sleep is essential for the body's growth and repair needs. Insufficient rest will only serve to sabotage all your efforts spending countless hours training hard. During the training periods, it is vital to respect the greater amount of sleep required.  The body requires more rest as more demands are placed on it. It is best to sleep in an optimal environment that is quiet, dark, and comfortable. This maximizes your chances of getting a good quality of sleep that the body needs.

So how much sleep do you need? Studies show that 7-8 hours of sleep is necessary for optimal performance for the average person.  Additionally, professional athletes (who train 4-6 hours a day) often need 1-2 hour naps in between their training sessions to recover.  It is important to keep a regular sleep schedule too; in particular, try to get up at the same time every day. This has to do with the body's natural physiological rhythm, also known as the circadian rhythm of our body. The circadian rhythm is responsible for changes in the levels of hormones to enable deep and restful sleep as well as a natural awakening. Thus, keeping a regular schedule of getting up enables your body to maximize it's potential performance.

So sleep well, train hard, and live healthy!

Tips for Your First Tournament

You plan to compete in your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) tournament, and you start feeling the nerves. You’ve never quite been in this situation before, and you’re not quite sure what to expect. Fret not, as here’s a simple guide that will help you make sense of all that you probably are thinking or feeling right now.

FUNDAMENTALS
If you are a white belt, then the Blue Belt Classes are essential in helping you build a strong foundation. It is critical to focus on the building blocks of your BJJ game. Improve the execution and efficiency of the techniques of bread-and-butter moves like armbars, triangles, positional controls and escapes. Be an absolute sponge in class; stay behind to clarify any queries you might have with the instructors and take up some private lessons to work out some of the few weaknesses you find in your own game.

NUTRITION
Proper nutrition is vital. Remember, your diet is literally what you eat, and not a quick, temporary fix to a permanent lifestyle. Think of a 50-30-20 ratio in terms of your carb-protein-fat intake ratio. Eat well and your body will thank you for it, especially during the tournament. Hydrate properly, by ensuring sufficient intake of fluids to replace those lost during training and the tournament. (approximately 1lb of body weight = 24 ounces) For optimal rehydration, ration your intake of fluids such that it does not exceed one cup approximately every 20 minutes.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING
Strength and Conditioning is vital to every martial arts and BJJ isn’t any exception. This will give you the edge in the tournament format, ensuring you are fresher in the latter stages of the event. FightShape classes offered at Evolve MMA are an indispensable ally in this department, helping you achieve prime conditioning to give you the edge. Having said this, competitors should never rely on strength in Jiu-Jitsu, as that will be losing sight of the principles of Jiu-Jitsu’s applications. BJJ is founded on efficiency and technique to allow a lesser man to overcome a bigger and stronger adversary.

TOURNAMENT TRAINING
Tournament training is where you piece everything together; it is a culmination of your Jiu-jitsu skills, strength and conditioning, and also your competition prowess and state of mind. Randori or live sparring with your friends can help greatly in this area. After all, a tournament is just just an extended and more adrenaline-filled version of Randori. This will expose any possible issues you might face during tournament day itself. The hard nature of the training will mimic the actual tournament intensity. These sessions are best done after class with your teammates, and would include elements like drills, stand up work (ie. Wrestling/Judo), sparring, and transitioning to your ground game.

MENTAL REHEARSAL
Having a run through of what will happen in the tournament helps in reducing your anxiety levels about the tournament day itself. Draw upon the experiences of your instructors and fellow teammates to help you prepare for both the expected and unexpected. This way, you can remain calm, focused on the important matters at hand on tournament day. Run through your favorite moves and positions. Visualize yourself getting out of difficult situations. Focus on have a clear state of mind for the day of the tournament.

PURPOSE
Above all, make sure to have fun. The point of martial arts is to have fun and to unleash your own potential. Tournaments are a fun way to test your own skills and to push the limits of your abilities. Don't take things too seriously. Train hard, learn as much as you can, and let the chips fall where they may. It is your first BJJ tournament. Chalk it up as a great life experience from which you will grow!

An Inspiration for the Evolve Family!

At its core, Evolve MMA is about unleashing the human potential - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually - of its students.  The Evolve Instructor Team is passionately committed to its mission of making a positive impact on the lives of its students.

Rufus Gandhi is one of our many treasured members at Evolve MMA. Though his unassuming mannerisms may blend him into the crowd, his calm and relaxed demeanour hides a truly inspirational story that will leave many in awe.

At the youthful age of 17,  he literally woke up one morning and was paralyzed.  With lifeless legs, he stumbled out of bed and onto the floor.  He was eventually diagnosed with cancer in his lower back.  While his peers were worrying about the GCE ‘A’ Level examinations, Rufus had other things in mind: Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma to be exact.

Life as he knew it was never going to be the same again.

After a risky surgery to remove his cancer and the 5 lower vertebrae in his spine, the recovery process was long and arduous.  Rufus learned to adapt to the changes in his body.  Five years passed and everything looked to be on the up.  However, just as he thought the worst was behind him, a series of illnesses revisited Rufus. After multiple tests, the final verdict was leukemia.

Luckily for Rufus, he had a successful match with his sister's bone marrow.  He was on the road to recovery again after a painful bone marrow transplant. The two battles (involving treatments like chemotherapy and steroids) had left Rufus with no hair, a lowered hemoglobin level, and a decreased oxygen supply in his blood. Doctors believed that Rufus would never again live an active lifestyle.  As fate would have it though, Rufus would step into a little place called Evolve MMA that would change his life forever.  Funnily enough, his adventure into martial arts all started with his daughter, Cerys.

After his battles with cancer, Rufus had gone on to finish his delayed university studies, to start working, and to get married.  In the process, his life took several stopovers to cities like London, Los Angeles and finally Singapore in 2008.  Through this period, he had seen his daughter, Cerys, getting bullied in each school she attended. Deciding it was time to do something about the situation, Rufus made the decision for her to learn martial arts.  In November 2009, he and his daughter joined Evolve MMA.

The initial training was tough, and Rufus struggled getting through the warm up sessions. It was an enormous leap for him, as he had no prior martial arts training whatsoever. His greatly lowered fitness level, compounded by the excess weight he had gained while on steroids, stacked all the odds against him.  Skipping and running caused a great deal of pain to his fragile back, and his chest would literally hurt from the warm up sessions during class.

However, having fought tougher battles through out his life at a much younger age, Rufus was used to persevering and working past his physical limitations. Additionally, the Evolve Instructor Team inspired him and unleashed his warrior spirit to even higher levels.  His mental strength, confidence, and discipline grew with each class at Evolve MMA.  With the bountiful experience, guidance and care of his instructors at Evolve, he now proudly stands as a Level 2 certified trainee in both Muay Thai and Boxing. Not too shabby for a guy with literally no lower back!

At the same time, his daughter, Cerys, has also been enjoying every minute at Evolve.  It has now become a “family affair” in more ways than one. The staff and instructors have taken her under their wings and she has quickly become one of the “babies” of the Evolve Family.  Her tremendous improvement has carried over into her daily life; her confidence has skyrocketed, her discipline has increased, and her mental strength has grown.  Above all, she is no longer a victim of bullying.

Close friends and family say that Evolve MMA is all that Rufus and Cerys ever seem to talk about. Their shared experience at Evolve MMA has brought them closer together and has added yet another dimension to the father-daughter bond they share.  They truly feel a part of the special Evolve Family and share in its mission to change the world for the better.

Here is to Achieving Greatness Within!
