In the Year 2013
"In the year 2013". It sounds like a date in a
futurist movie from the 80's. Well, the world has not come to an end, Y2K was a
bust, and the Mayans seemed to have their dates mixed up. It looks like the
world as we know it will continue on. So it is now the start of a brand new
year, and we all know what comes with that…New Year's Resolutions!!! I believe that
about 90% of the resolutions made this year will have to do with FITNESS. In
some form or another everyone wants to look and feel better in the "New Year".
Yet, if these resolutions are made every year than why isn't everyone walking
around toned and fit? It’s because the pleasure of finally looking awesome in a
bathing suit or getting off your blood pressure medicine is not worth the pain
of waking up early to attend a Muay Thai class or saying no to that next pint of Ben
and Jerry's ice cream.
Research has proven that most decisions in life are based
on the need to gain pleasure and avoid pain. Thus, in order to get fit you need
to reprogram what you receive pleasure from and what causes you pain. The
pleasure of dropping 10 kilos of fat needs to be greater than any night out
with friends or any meal you could possibly eat.
Let’s try an experiment. Close your eyes and imagine yourself 10kg lighter. Your wearing
new clothes, friends cannot stop saying how great you look, and everyone wants
to know how you did it. This is the feeling you need to remember when your friends
are laughing at you for ordering a salad on a Friday night or when you refuse
your Grandma’s special homemade dessert.
Fitness is simple, but not easy. It takes hard work and
discipline. You need to want the feeling of true health. There is a saying that
"nothing taste as good as FIT feels". The only problem with this
statement is that most people have never really been fit or they have forgotten
what it feels like to live in real fitness. To wake up each morning, roll out
of bed without coffee, and attack the day. To fly through your workout with
energy and excitement. It may sound like a movie or a fantasy, but it can be a
reality.
