Collegiate Wrestling Match of the Year: Dake vs. Taylor (video)

This past weekend, the NCAA Division 1 National Wrestling Championships were held in Des Moines, Iowa.  In the United States, it does not get any bigger than this tournament.  It is the pinnacle of collegiate wrestling.  Beyond this event, there is only the Olympics or in recent times, MMA.  In fact, some of MMA’s biggest stars once competed at this prestigious tournament.   Guys like Chris Weidman, Mark Munoz, Johny Hendricks, Josh Koschek, Daniel Cormier, Phil Davis, Randy Couture, Chael Sonnen, Mo Lawal, Ben Askren, Cain Velazquez, and the list goes on.

This year, the tournament featured what could very easily be called the most highly anticipated match in the history of collegiate wrestling.  Kyle Dake of Cornell University came in to the tournament as a 3 time national champion.  Over his career he had won at 3 different weight classes, and this year he would again try to win at a new weight class.  A win would put Dake in the history books as the first person in NCAA history to win 4 national titles at 4 different weight classes.  Standing in his way was David Taylor, the returning 165 lbs. champion and last year’s winner of the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award.  Taylor holds a career record of 100-2.  As expected, both men held up their end of the bargain and advanced to the tournament finals.

Check out their incredible match below.  These are two of the best wrestlers in the world in their competitive primes.  This is as good as collegiate wrestling gets.
