Evolve Shines Again!

On Saturday night, the Evolve Fight Team once again demonstrated why it is the #1 professional fight team in Asia and one of the best in the world.  Prior to ONE FC: Destiny of Warriors in Malaysia, the so-called experts all but counted the Evolve Fight Team out, listing 3 of our 4 fighters as heavy underdogs for the event.  Fortunately, the Evolve Fight Team doesn’t pay attention to odds makers and thrives on proving the naysayers wrong.  Led by Chatri Sityodtong and Heath Sims, the Evolve Fight Team put on a historic performance Saturday night, winning 3 of 4 fights in spectacular fashion at ONE Fighting Championship, Asia's largest and most prestigious MMA event.

Mitch Chilson got the night started when he sunk in a deep rear naked choke against opponent AJ Mansor.  Although Mitch is best known for his strong Muay Thai striking skills, on Saturday night, he showed off an entirely new set of skills as he out grappled his opponent demonstrating his further development into a complete mixed martial artist.

Next up was Brian Choi who for nearly two and a half rounds dominated his opponent Arnaud Lepont.  It appeared Brian was on his way to a convincing victory when disaster struck and he was forced to submit to a deep rear naked choke.  Although Brian didn’t have his hand raised at the end of the night, he fought like a champion and showed the heart of a true warrior.  You can bet Brian will use this as a learning experience and come back stronger than ever in his next outing.

Following Brian’s loss, it was up to Leandro “Brodinho” Issa to get Evolve back on track, and that he most certainly did.  Although Brodinho was the heavy underdog coming in, he controlled the fight from bell to bell with a well-rounded striking and grappling attack.  Brodinho earned himself a huge win against a big name and showed that he is not just a BJJ specialist, but rather a complete martial artist.

Last up for the Evolve Fight Team was Zorobabel Moreira against Roger Huerta.  Once again the Evolve Fight Team was thought to be a heavy underdog coming into this fight, and many expected Huerta to run through Zoro.  That is not how it turned out.  Following up on his last victory at ONE FC: War of the Lions, Zoro sent the MMA world a message that he is just as comfortable striking it out on his feet as he is securing submissions on the ground.  Zoro used a very polished Muay Thai game to slowly but surely pick Huerta apart before finishing him off with a spectacular soccer kick KO.  If Zoro wasn’t on the MMA world’s radar before this weekend, he certainly is now.

All in all it was a truly fantastic weekend not only for Evolve MMA, but Asian MMA on a whole.  In both victory and defeat everyone on the Evolve Fight Team learned and grew together this weekend, and you can bet we will be back even stronger next time.  Congratulations to all those who competed on Saturday night, and a special thank you to ONE FC for putting on another epic show.
