Learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Singapore at Evolve MMA

In response to the growing number of inquiries regarding the various martial arts programs on offer at Evolve MMA, we have decided to create a running series of feature articles that will provide an in depth look into our many world class programs. In each feature, we plan to take you on a guided tour of what it is like to train in a specific discipline at Evolve MMA. In this article, we will cover our renowned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) program.

Our instructor team features authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champions from Brazil.

BJJ techniques are primarily focused on grappling and ground fighting. The objective is to take the opponent to the ground in order to secure a dominant position and submission hold.

There are positional techniques that focus on sweeps and guard passes, and there are submission techniques that focus on joint-locks and chokeholds. BJJ is ideal for the student wishing to learn real world self-defense while achieving peak health and fitness.

The majority of BJJ classes at Evolve MMA will run for one hour in duration. We also have special classes such as the BJJ randoori class, which will run for 1 ½ hours. We accommodate even the most hectic schedules by offering multiple classes per day from the very early morning until the late evening. You can view our complete schedule here.

Depending on your individual schedule and level of fitness, you can choose how often you will train. We recommend training at least 3 – 5 times per week.  However, we also have many students who train 7 days a week multiple times a day.

Every Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class at Evolve MMA will begin with a thorough warm up session. The warm up prepares the body for physically intensive training and prevents unnecessary injuries. A typical warm up will include a variety of athletic movements such as forward rolls, backward rolls, push ups, sit ups, lunge walks, and squat jumps. You will also learn BJJ specific movements such as the hip escape and triangle sit up.

After a thorough warm up, the instructor will demonstrate techniques and work with the students to master the fine details. This portion of the class is done with partners and often includes specific technique drills. At the end of each class, the instructor will allow students to test out their skills in a live sparring session, which in BJJ is called “rolling” or “randoori”.

The BJJ classes at Evolve MMA are divided according to belt level. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, experience and skill is recognized by a belt ranking system. The order of ranking from beginner to master is as follows: white, blue, purple, brown, black, and red. Beginner students will start in one of our white and blue belt classes, which focuses on the most basic BJJ techniques. As you advance in skill level, you will receive belt promotions from your instructors.

For higher level students, we offer purple belt classes and black belt classes. As you advance to these higher level classes, you will begin to master higher level techniques and submissions. You will begin to develop your own unique BJJ style, which the instructors will encourage and help to further develop.

2x BJJ Copa do Mundo World Champion, Leandro Ataides, gives his full attention to his students at training.

You can expect to learn chokeholds such as the guillotine choke, rear naked choke, D’arce choke, and anaconda choke. You will also learn joint locks like the arm bar, Kimura, Americana, wristlock, and knee bar. In addition to submission holds, our program will instruct you in positional techniques such as the spider guard, closed guard, butterfly guard, and many more. The objective of your BJJ training should be to obtain complete mastery of ground control and submissions.

We also offer entire classes devoted solely to sparring, which in BJJ is referred to as randoori. The randoori class runs for a full 1 ½ hours. After a good warm up session, the remainder of the class is dedicated to sparring. Students can expect to roll with a single partner for up to 7 minutes. After a short break, students are again paired up for another 7 minute sparring session. This will continue for the duration of the class. Randoori is one of the most physically intensive classes. It is also one of the most important training sessions for serious students of BJJ. This is where you can measure your progress and identify your weaknesses.

For the students that have demonstrated the commitment, desire, and passion to take their BJJ training to the highest level, we offer the Evolve BJJ Competition Team. The team is selected through tryouts that are held periodically throughout the year. Only the most dedicated students are selected. Members of the Evolve BJJ Competition Team are invited to private team training sessions, and they are prepared by our World Champion instructors to compete in local and international BJJ competitions.

Many of our students experience significant and positive changes in their lives through the practice of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts. The Teo family, Zoyd, Clarissa, Zea, Cayden, and Zelle, share their inspiring story with us below.
