Metamoris 4: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Meets MMA

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an inefficient and unsophisticated modern fad”, said Chael Sonnen in an interview with Adam Guillen of MMAMania.com in 2011. Three years later, Chael Sonnen is in danger of eating his words when he battles Andre Galvao at Metamoris 4, an upcoming grappling event to be held on August 9 in Los Angeles, California.

Check out the awesome trailer for Metamoris 4 below:

Metamoris has Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purists from around the world on the edge of their seats in anticipation  of their latest event, which features top mixed martial artists against BJJ legends. Chael Sonnen, after recently announcing his retirement from MMA, has decided to try his hand at grappling.  His opponent is none other than 7 time Mundials champion and 3 time ADCC gold medalist, Andre Galvao.

Check out the below video for a beautiful display of Andre Galvao’s grappling prowess.

Other exciting matches to look out for at Metamoris 4 are Dean Lister vs. Josh Barnett and Keenan Cornelius vs. Vinny Magalhaes.  Taking some time away from MMA, Barnett will be looking to showcase the discipline of catch wrestling. In Dean Lister, Barnett faces one of the world’s most experienced and accomplished grapplers. Lister has not been submitted in competition in over 15 years.

Metamoris 4 is a true dream card for every BJJ fan, featuring the best competitors in the world.  The entire event will be available via live streaming at www.METAMORIS.com.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Breakdown : Keenan Cornelius’ “Worm Guard”

The name Keenan Cornelius has been abuzz in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community since the time this young phenom earned his purple belt.  Cornelius quickly established himself as one of the world’s most exciting prospects after winning double gold at purple belt in prestigious BJJ tournaments such as the Pan Ams and the Mundials; the start of the road to a notable streak of IBJJF victories.

Keenan Cornelius wins gold at the World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship

Now at the black belt level, Cornelius continues to amaze with his “modern jiu-jitsu”. His guard techniques are smooth and effective, creating fan frenzy amongst BJJ addicts. The latest and most talked about technique employed by Cornelius is the “worm guard”, which relies on using a lasso position and lapel grip. Cornelius has successfully used this move against renowned black belts such as Marcus Buchecha, Murilo Santana, Braulio Estima, and Leandro Lo.

The below video shows the “worm guard” at work against Leandro Lo at the latest Mundials. Cornelius uses the “worm guard” to successfully sweep Leandro Lo and earn two points.

This position is effective against BJJ practitioners who like to pass the guard from the standing position or combat base. The guard player is able to establish good grips and control because they are holding the lapel not only with their hands, but with their foot as well.

In this video, Cornelius breaks down the details of his famous “worm guard”. As you can see, the guard passer’s legs are effectively trapped, preventing them from passing.

Evolve Student of the Month: Nobuhiko Takatsu

For the month of May 2014, we are very excited to announce Nobuhiko Takatsu as the Student of the Month.  Nobuhiko is one of Evolve MMA’s most talented and committed BJJ students.  He recently received the highest degree of honor and recognition from the Evolve BJJ Instructor Team when he was awarded the first ever black belt in the history of the Evolve Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program.  Although Nobuhiko will certainly not be the last to earn such an honor, he will always be the first and a shining example to all students of what can be accomplished through hard work and dedication.  Nobuhiko is an excellent role model for all students at Evolve MMA, and we are very honored to have him as part of the Evolve Family.
