Achieve Greatness Within

The biggest misconception is that martial arts is about fighting. It is the farthest thing from the truth. On the contrary, martial arts is NOT about fighting.

The Evolve Instructor Team has over 450 years of championship experience at the highest levels of competition in the world such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the Art of War Fighting Championship, the Lumpinee Muay Thai World Championship, the Mundials Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, the No-Gi World Championship, the WBC and WBA Boxing World Championship, and many other top tournaments.

And for the Evolve Instructor Team, the martial arts is about the journey of continuous self-improvement physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It is the journey of becoming the best person that you can possibly be in all areas of your life. This quest is the essence of martial arts to the Evolve Instructor Team.

What do we mean by it?

-When you learn a kick or an arm bar, you develop the physical aspect of your body and learn how to turn it into a graceful, powerful machine. It is about balance, coordination, speed, and power. It takes years to understand your body and how to unleash its potential.

-When you learn not to quit when you are tired, you sharpen your mental strength. At Evolve, our classes are designed to push you to your limits. It is easy to throw in the towel and quit. However, as an analogy for life, the key to success is to keep fighting and keep doing your best.

-When you train for months and watch yourself get into the best shape of your life, you inherit a boost in self esteem and discipline. When you feel great on the inside, it emanates in all areas of your life.

-When you learn to lose for the first time in a sparring match, you understand the meaning of honor in defeat and humility in victory. It develops you spiritually and allows you to see the world with a different lens.

-When you learn to defend yourself at a high level, you will inherit a quiet confidence that no one will ever be able to take from you. You will walk taller, feel stronger, and believe that anything is achievable. It is all empowering and encompassing.

-When you conquer your fears in martial arts, you will learn how to conquer your fears in life. It is the same process and application in all areas of your life. And it is liberating to live without fear.

As you can see from just a few small examples, the martial arts helps to unlock your potential and to maximize everything that you are meant to be in life. For the Evolve Instructor Team, our greatest passion in life is to make a positive change in the lives of our students. It truly is. The martial arts has given us everything in our lives; and we simply desire to share our greatest love with everyone so that it may help their lives too.

At Evolve, our motto is "Achieve Greatness Within" because the journey of martial arts is about you and how you can be everything that you want to be in life. So let go of your fears, dream big, and live life to the fullest.

Here is to Achieving Greatness Within together!

Getting Started in Martial Arts

If you are completely new to martial arts, you may find this article helpful.

Starting anything new is always a little bit of a nerve wracking, yet exhilarating experience. If you pause a moment to think about all of the "firsts" in your life, they will probably make you smile - the first time you finally rode a bicycle without training wheels, the first time you started school, the first time you made a best friend, the first time you lost an important game in high school, the first time you fell in love, the first time you succeeded at something, the first day you went to class at university, the first time you started a job...

Starting martial arts is no different. When you look back on this time in your life, you will smile. However, right now, there is always a little curiosity mixed with a sense of adventure and uncertainty. Is it safe? Will I like it? Will I be good at it? Will I belong?

Here are some guidelines to ensuring that you have an enjoyable experience in your first year of martial arts and beyond:

1) Choose the right school. You should try to find a school that fosters the right environment for learning. The culture of a school always starts at the top. If the instructors are friendly and warm, the school will emanate those qualities. Pay attention to every detail. Are the instructors passionate about what they do? Is safety the #1 priority of the school? What are the instructor backgrounds and qualifications? How do they behave as human beings and what are their values? How does the gym look and feel? Does it reflect a sense of pride and professionalism? How do the other students interact with one another as well as with instructors? Does the schedule fit with your own schedule? Is it located in a convenient location? How do you feel when you are at the school? Does it feel safe? In the end, you should trust your instincts. The best school is always the one that "feels right" to you. Be sure to visit a few schools before deciding on one. The most important thing is that you find a safe, fun, and supportive environment. You (and everyone else) will flourish in that type of environment.

2) Try to relax and enjoy the experience. Many beginners often feel very self-conscious. They somehow think that everyone is watching them and how silly they might look. You should learn to forget those feelings and try to focus on being in the moment. Listen to what the instructors tell you and mimic their movements to the best of your ability. Try to find another student who is a little bit more experienced and feel free to ask them plenty of questions. If it is the right school, then everyone will be lending a helping hand because we all were beginners at some point in our lives. Also, you should do your best not to worry about your progress (or lack of progress if that is the case). Martial arts is really a turtle's game. The person who keeps at it patiently will one day find themselves a great martial artist. Slow steady improvement is the best way to build a solid foundation.

3) Follow the rules. Every school will have its own set of rules. You should do your best to follow them since it is for your safety. If everyone follows the rules, then the classes will be safe. The rules are not meant to be annoying. They are meant to create a safe, fun, and supportive environment. Beware of schools without rules or guidelines. Accidents are waiting to happen at those schools.

4) Make sure to have the appropriate attire and equipment. It is for your safety. Also, it helps you to assimilate more quickly and feel like a part of the team.

5) Keep an open mind. Learning martial arts requires an open mind. Open your mind and absorb the lessons like a sponge. Along the same vein, you should question everything that you learn. Understand how and why a technique is useful. Don't just go through the motions. Think about each technique and how it is applied.

6) Stay committed. It usually takes a minimum of 3 months before you start really seeing the rewards. Like anything in life, your rewards in martial arts are directly proportionate to your efforts. If you give it your heart and soul, you will get much more in return. The benefits of martial arts are fitness and good health, weight and fat loss, increased muscle tone, stress reduction, increased confidence and discipline, self-defense, and life long friendships. If you stick with it, you will find yourself watching all of these benefits spill over into the other areas of your life. Invariably, the martial arts are an excellent platform to transform your life.

7) Have FUN! If you are not having fun, then something is wrong. After each class, you should feel completely spent and experience a natural high. You should feel a sense of accomplishment, knowing that you were pushed to your limits and that you learned something new. Over time, this FUN becomes almost an addiction if you stick with it. You will see your transformation physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Your confidence will soar. Your mental fortitude will rise. Your focus will sharpen. You will look good, feel good, and will be ready to conquer the world.

To Attack or to Defend?

Some successful UFC fighters attack ferociously like UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar and UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn. They explode with aggression and seek to dominate their opponents. Yet other successful UFC fighters tend to dance away like UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida and UFC Middleweight Champion Andersen Silva. The same goes for the Muay Thai world and the BJJ world - there are aggressors and there are defenders.

So, is it better to attack or to defend? Is there a right way or a wrong way?

Interestingly, the answers lie within you. Humans are all wired with a "fight or flight" instinct when faced with danger. Some of us are hard-coded to fight all the time. And yet, some of us are hard-coded to avoid danger at all costs. This natural tendency is what you should follow as a martial artist. The key to success as a martial artist is to do what is natural for you and what you love to do. The same analogy can be applied to striking versus grappling. Some of us love to swim while others hate the water. Martial arts is a journey of the self. It is about unleashing your potential physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Martial arts simply gives you the tools to protect yourself. It is up to you to learn how best to apply those tools for your personal situation. At Evolve Mixed Martial Arts, our motto is "Achieve Greatness Within" because each personal journey is different. Yet, the goal is the same - to become the best version that you can be of yourself - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

So, is it better to attack or to defend?

In general, there is no correct answer. It is with what you are most comfortable. If in a sparring session, you find yourself as the aggressor all the time, the answer is that you should focus on developing an offense-based game. Do what comes naturally to yourself and learn to maximize your strengths. Of course, the idea is to use controlled offense in order to win. It is very rare for reckless offense to work, especially at the higher levels of Muay Thai, BJJ, and MMA. On the flip side, if in a sparring session, you find yourself dancing away all the time, the answer is that you should focus on developing a defense-based game. You should try to focus on turning your defensive instincts into a strength. Of course, if you are early in your martial arts learning, you should experiment with both offense and defense to find your comfort zone.

Is there a right or wrong way?

As you can see by the various approaches of the UFC World Champions, there is no right or wrong way. If you look closely at each fighter mentioned above, you will see some commonalities. For offensive fighters like Brock Lesnar and BJ Penn, the key to success is to learn to reign in their aggressive tendencies and use controlled aggression and technique to win. For defensive fighters like Andersen Silva and Lyoto Machida, the key to success is to learn to when to explode into offense at the right moments. In other words, if you are an aggressive fighter, you have to learn to be patient and use intelligence to time your attacks. Likewise, if you are a defensive fighter, you have to learn to recognize when you must attack with intelligence. As you can see, both fighting styles require patience, timing, technique, and intelligence.

To become phenomenal, you must have incredible offense and incredible defense. For example, Heavyweight Boxing Legend Mike Tyson had one of the best offensive games in history with monster knockout power and lightning speed. However, what really set him apart was that he also had unbelievable defense. His opponents were often 10-40 pounds heavier and 5-8 inches taller. They often had a reach advantage. Yet, Tyson was unhittable, especially early in his career as he rose through the ranks and became World Champion. People don't realize that Tyson practiced endless hours on how not to get hit. He had crazy head movement and phenomenal footwork. Most of the time, Tyson was the aggressor in his fights and he would march forward. However, his defense was what allowed him to enter his opponent's space so that he could unleash his attack without getting hit. Mike Tyson is truly a rare fighter. He had unbelievable power and speed. He had superior offense and an even better defense. He never took much damage as he unleashed his offense. Of course, as time wore on, Mike Tyson lost his discipline and stopped using his defense. Towards the end of his career, he simply used aggression and power to try to stop his opponents. He threw out his defense and paid the price as a result. Nevertheless, in his prime, Mike Tyson was perhaps the greatest heavyweight boxer in history.

Another great story is Samart Payakaroon, the greatest Muay Thai fighter in history. Samart is famously known for having the smallest heart of any fighter at the Sityodtong Gym. His natural tendency was always to run away from a fight. As a child, Samart would often quit if he got hurt in a sparring session. He hated getting hit and his pain tolerance was quite low. He had a soft chin too. He simply was not cut out to be a warrior - or so it seemed. On the flip side, Samart had unbelievable talent. He didn't possess raw knockout power, but he had the reflexes and the balance of a cat. His eyes were always sharp and he could see things happen before they actually did. Samart could float around the ring as if he were riding a magic carpet. So Kru Yodtong, Thailand's greatest Muay Thai teacher, developed a game around Samart's strengths and natural defensive tendencies. Kru Yodtong made Samart practice the push kick every day and forced him to do all defensive maneuveurs 2x more than the other fighters. Over time, because Samart practiced his defense and push kick so much, he became unhittable. After Samart became a master of defense, it was then when his career really skyrocketed. Fight after fight, all these great warriors could not touch Samart with clean shots. He push kicked and danced his way to victories. His confidence soared and he began to develop a defense-based attacking style. Soon, Samart was able to play an offensive game at will and he could always use his defensive game as his bread and butter. On top of that, Samart learned to fight in both right-handed stance (orthodox) and left-handed stance (southpaw). The remarkable thing about Samart was that he could turn into an aggressive attacking machine or he could turn into a dancing defensive machine - and he could do it as a right-handed fighter and as a left-handed fighter.

So is there a right way or a wrong way? No, there is only YOUR WAY. Do what you feel is most natural. Learn to maximize your strengths - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Learn to improve your weaknesses - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. At Evolve Mixed Martial Arts, you will receive some of the best instruction in the world for Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA. It is up to you to take the tools that Evolve teaches and to incorporate them into your game.

Ultimately, you will learn how to Achieve Greatness Within and become the best version of yourself possible - in and out of the ring!

Anticipation

At the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) 2005 Submission Wrestling World Championship, three-time All-American collegiate wrestler Reese Andy wrestled a close match against Fabricio Werdum. Andy held Werdum, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion, on his back for much of the fight. Near the end of the match, Andy seized Werdum's back. Somersaulting out of a turtle position, Werdum exposed his leg and in an instant, Andy pounced on the vulnerable limb to apply a heel hook.

But the mistake was Andy's, not Werdum's. No longer smothered under Andy's punishing top position, Werdum re-positioned himself and reversed the heel hook. Andy tapped out.

All grapplers have experienced the thrill of submission victory in some form or another. The submission stems from a momentary opportunity. It is the ill positioned leg prone to capture and then a heel hook. It is the face that squirms free from an opponent's smothering bicep, only to leave the neck and vital arteries exposed for strangulation. It is the outstretched arm struggling futilely against the strength of another man's entire body.

Tap, tap, tap.

Against a difficult opponent, however, so much impedes the successful application of a submission maneuver. Your opponent defends his vulnerabilities using quickness, strength, and unpredictable movements. He breaks free of your grasp. Where you see an opening for an attack, he closes it. Over and over he eludes you. What do you do?

The key is anticipation. By developing a sense of others' grappling behavior and understanding their future moves, you grasp hold of the present. Straddling your opponent tightly from the mount position, you realize your own imbalance. As his torso wriggles and squirms and suddenly his entire body rolls, you have no time to think. You have no time to react. You must anticipate. If you will avoid being toppled over, you have to avoid clinging to the straddled position. You must let go.

Grappling is not about holding tight, nor about letting go. It's about both, and knowing when to choose one path or the other. In a given situation, the decision you make could be right or wrong. No matter, you will rarely have the luxury of being able to react. So instead anticipate. With a strong sense of anticipation, you can avoid Andy's fate. With a stronger sense of anticipation, you can make Werdum's victory your own.

The Circle of Life

Pictured on the right is Kru Yodtong Senanan, the Greatest Muay Thai Grandmaster in History

No matter how amazing they may seem at their peak, all warriors move through the circle of life. They start off as fresh kids with big dreams and high hopes. Martial arts hardens the body, toughens the mind, and sharpens the spirit. Over time, warriors are born and champions are made. Eventually, the former warriors and champions become vessels of wisdom for the next generation. Teachers are born and the cycle begins anew.

The Sityodtong Gym in Thailand is widely regarded as the most respected Muay Thai gym in Thailand for producing the most World Champions in history. Kru Yodtong Senanan single-handedly groomed each World Champion from a child. His love of Muay Thai inspired him to create new moves and techniques never seen before. His dedication to his students created the best fighting team in Thailand. Kru Yodtong Senanan is the greatest Muay Thai teacher alive today. The Royal Family of Thailand bestowed a Lifetime Masters Achievement Award upon Kru Yodtong for his influence on the sport of Muay Thai. To this day, it is the only award ever given out to a Muay Thai teacher.

The warrior tradition of Sityodtong is carried on across 11 academies around the globe. Evolve Mixed Martial Arts is the largest branch of the Sityodtong Gym in the world, excluding Thailand. At Evolve, it is our goal to train our students in the tradition of excellence as taught by Kru Yodtong. Evolve is staffed with the largest Sityodtong Instructor Team outside of Thailand with a total of 9 certified instructors (with 2 World Champions) from the Sityodtong Gym. Each Evolve Muay Thai instructor is a world-class fighter and has been with Kru Yodtong since he was a child.

Here are some pictures of Sityodtong Gym today. The circle of life continues as the next generation of warriors begins their quest for glory and honor.

Pictured to the right are some young professional fighters from Sityodtong Gym.

Ultimately, the journey of martial arts is about achieving greatness within. It is about conquering your fears, overcoming your weaknesses, and unlocking your potential. There is no destination. It is the lifetime mastery of the physical, the mental, the emotional, and the spiritual. The beauty of the circle of life and martial arts is that it never ends. It is the journey of continuous self-improvement. Through it all, you can only hope that you have given more than you have taken.

The Greatest Muay Thai Fighter is back at Evolve!

Evolve Mixed Martial Arts is pleased to announce that the greatest Muay Thai fighter in history, Samart Payakaroon, has joined the elite Evolve Instructor Team and will be teaching on a regular basis as an official Evolve Instructor. However, Samart will be teaching at Evolve on a scheduled rotating basis from Thailand throughout the year.

In Thailand, there is only one (1) superhero of Muay Thai who is recognized as the greatest Muay Thai fighter of all time. You can ask any taxi driver in Thailand about him. The incredible thing is that almost everyone in Thailand will give you the same answer if you ask them who the greatest Muay Thai fighter of all time is. He is the Muhammad Ali, Tiger Woods, and Michael Jordan of Muay Thai. His name is Samart Payakaroon. And Samart is the closest thing to a superhero in Thailand.

Here is some food for thought to give you some perspective. One of our Lumpinee Muay Thai World Champions, Nuengpichit Sityodtong, is considered one of the top fighters of his era. Nueng says that Samart is 10x better than anyone that has ever fought in Muay Thai, including all the fighters of today. In fact, Nuengpichit says that he feels like a beginner next to Samart.

How crazy is that? If you are an Evolve student, you know how unbelievable Nueng is as a World Champion.

In his prime, Samart was untouchable and simply brilliant. He was a Lumpinee Muay Thai World Champion in four (4) weight divisions. He even fought in western Boxing for fun and managed to become WBC World Champion in that too. Then Samart went on to have a lucrative career as a Thai pop star and actor. Incredibly, he won the Thai versions of the Oscars and Grammys too.

So what made Samart so special as a fighter? He certainly was not the hardest kicker. He was not even the hardest puncher. And Samart did not like knees that much. Yet, he is considered the greatest Muay Thai fighter of all time by the Thai media and public. Samart was special because he had the gift of the sharpest eyes in the history of the sport. He was unhittable. Samart could read an opponent's kick or punch and avoid them by half an inch. He had lightning speed and he could throw the most complicated moves in Muay Thai with ease. To watch Samart in action is to truly witness Muay Thai at its greatest art form.

If you ever make it to Thailand, we recommend that you try to find his old fights on DVD. Samart's peak was in the 1980s. The Evolve Muay Thai Instructor Team still watches his fights on a regular basis.

Samart Payakaroon was and still is Kru Yodtong Senanan's most famous World Champion. As many of you know already, Kru Yodtong Senanan is considered the greatest Grandmaster of Muay Thai in Thailand for producing the most World Champions in the history of Muay Thai. Here is Kru Yodtong's biography. The Evolve Muay Thai Instructor Team interviewed Kru Yodtong Senanan for this article. (The Evolve Muay Thai Instructor Team speaks to Kru Yodtong every few weeks). Here is what Kru Yodtong had to say about Samart.

"Without a doubt, Samart is the most talented Muay Thai fighter to have ever graced this earth and the Sityodtong Gym. My other World Champions were all good, but Samart was exceptional. But it wasn't always this way. When Samart was 11 years old, he would always get into trouble by me. Samart was lazy and he did not have a warrior's heart. He did not like to get hit and was always afraid of getting hurt in the ring. In fact, Samart probably has the smallest heart out of all of my World Champions. The weapon that changed Samart's career forever was his push kick. Once I taught him how to use it as an offensive weapon, his opponents could no longer hit him. I made Samart practice two hundred (200) push kicks against a wall at the end of each training day. To this day, Samart's push kick is rated as the best of all time. Samart also had the most amazing reflexes in the world. There are countless times when an opponent would throw a head kick at full speed and force at him from only one (1) meter away and Samart would effortlessly avoid it. His eyes were one (1) in a billion. He saw everything before things happened. The other aspect that made Samart amazing was his speed. He could throw kicks, punches, knees, and elbows at lightning speed. Samart would knock people out on sheer speed. Samart had the uncanny ability to put together the most unique combinations and the most difficult techniques in Muay Thai. I am 72 years old and have been doing Muay Thai for over 55 years. Sadly, I do not think there will ever be another Samart again. He was truly a gift to the Thai people."
-Kru Yodtong Senanan

As you can see, Samart Payakaroon is the greatest legend of Muay Thai.

Here is a piece from our ground game experts:

When you've just started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or submission wrestling, it is sometimes very difficult to make sense of all the different pieces of advice. At first, some of it makes sense: "Establish position before submission." Other advice makes slightly less sense. "Stay balanced," for example. After all, how many times have you felt "balanced" only to be swept or rolled over on to your back? Other times the words of advice are completely contradictory. At one moment, "Stay loose!" At another, "Stay tight!" Which is it--loose or tight? How do you make sense of all this?

Sometimes expert advice conflicts with conventional wisdom. Common sense says that rear mount is the most dominant position in the grappling game. To a BJJ World Champion, the rear mount is the most coveted of all positions because you can have all the control in the world without any risk to you. Yet one of the best heavyweight grapplers (Randy Couture) in UFC history despised it. If one of his opponents turtled up, the former UFC champion said, "I would rather take a modified side control [than seize the back]."

Knowledge is everywhere and comes from all sources. Observe it, memorize it, believe it, but realize that as an individual, the only way you can truly capture knowledge is through understanding.

Respect knowledge, but demand of yourself understanding. The next time a BJJ master or grappling wizard gives you advice, try this: consider it gospel. Memorize and believe it. But then apply it. See if it works for you. Especially if you fail at adapting the technique, work even harder to figure out when and under what circumstances the advice holds true. By giving context to knowledge, and then internalizing it, you are further along the path to true understanding.

Here is a picture of an open workout for the public and media in the lobby of the Venetian Hotel in Macau in the build-up to the big event, Art of War 14. Unfortunately, Braga's takedown inadvertently threw his opponent out of the ring and sent him to the hospital. The fight was ruled a no-contest due to accident.

Braga will be fighting in the next Art of War. Evolve is hoping for a rematch with Rodney Glunder.
