How to Get Promoted at Evolve

If you have ever wondered about what it takes to get promoted to the next level at Evolve, your questions are answered below! The good news is that the Evolve Instructor Team uses the same criteria for promotions across all the martial arts taught at Evolve. The bad news is that Evolve has some of the highest standards in the world when it comes to making sure our students are the best that they can be! Nevertheless, because of our unwavering standards of authenticity, you can be assured that you are getting some of the best training in the world. If you follow these simple steps, you will be on your way to getting promoted to the next level!

1) Technique. You have to demonstrate proper technique and technical knowledge for that particular level in order to get promoted. The Evolve Instructor Team uses the highest standards of excellence in order to judge your progress. As many of you know, Evolve is widely regarded as the top MMA academy in Asia. Our passion is to see our students achieve greatness within - and of course, to see them inherit the best technique in the world too! Without proper technique, you can never develop into a good martial artist. Technique is the essence and foundation to future growth. With good technique, you will see a big increase in your speed, power, balance, and reflex. Always feel free to ask your instructors lots of questions. The Evolve Instructor Team is here for you. Our greatest desire is to see you improve and to see how your life changes for the better because of the martial arts. So don't be shy! No question is ever too silly or too easy. We are here for you!

2) Consistency. You must come to class consistently and you must give it 100% during class. It develops your technique more rapidly, boosts your fitness levels, raises your mental strength, increases your muscle tone, etc. If you don't come consistently, then you will not gain all these benefits. As your instructors, we can see if your fitness is improving, if your technique is sharper, etc. At Evolve, promotions are earned only if you deserve it. They are not given because people like you or you look good. If you have good technique, but never come to class (or skip many weeks, etc), it is almost impossible to get promoted. Why? Because you will not be fit, you will not be mentally strong, you will not have speed/power, you will not be sharp in your technique, etc. Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is about your personal growth - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. If you are erratic in your attendance, you will not gain all the valuable lessons like discipline, mental strength, etc. With over 300 years of experience, the Evolve Instructor Team knows that the turtle wins the race when it comes to learning martial arts. If you come 2-3 times per week CONSISTENTLY, you will always improve more significantly than the person who trains every day for a month and then disappears for a month. Finally, we look to see your heart. Are you someone who quits easily? Are you someone who pushes hard when it is tough? Do you give it your all during class? Are you striving to improve yourself?

3) Teamwork. At Evolve, we are a family. It is the way Kru Yodtong taught Nueng, Papa, Chatri, Yoddecha, Ni, and everyone. If you help everyone on the team, you will gain too because everyone will look after you. This is the warrior conduct that Kru Yodtong instilled in all of his students at Sityodtong Gym in Thailand. The Gracie tradition is the same. And, this is something very important to all of the instructors at Evolve. We are a family, we are a team. Together, we rise. Together, we fall. Together, we conquer.

Most importantly perhaps, please do not think about your promotion. You should focus on the joy of learning a beautiful art. You should focus on the benefits that you are reaping by training under some of the best instructors in the world. You should enjoy the new lifelong friendships made at Evolve. You should savor the journey. If you love what you do, it will show and it will only be a matter of time before you progress onto the next level.

Achieve Greatness Within and Give Back

On Saturday, at the age of 95, Norman Borlaug passed on. While he wasn't exactly an obscure figure, it is shocking that his name isn't better known. I admit that until he passed, however, neither did I know of him.

A Hall of Fame college wrestler in the US, Norman came from humble beginnings. He grew up on a farm in Iowa, the son of third generation immigrants from Norway. He was recruited to wrestle at the University of Minnesota, but his plans hit a snag after he flunked the entrance exam. He subsequently enrolled in the school's two year program. Borlaug credited wrestling with giving him toughness. "It's an inappropriate crutch perhaps," he said, "but that's the way I'm made."

Through toughness, stubbornness, determination--call it what you will--Borlaug eventually did graduate, moving onto a career in the Forest Service. When his job was eliminated, he went back to school and earned his doctorate--no small feat for an athlete who flunked the college entrance exam. Yet this accomplishment would pale compared to the mission upon which he was about to embark. Few at the time probably would have realized that this man was about to make a difference in hundreds of millions of lives.

Borlaug was best known not for his prowess on the wrestling mat, but in the science lab and wheat fields. While working for a research cooperative, Borlaug and his team developed a more resilient strain of wheat, one that could boost wheat yields around the world. Once this strain was introduced to the Indian subcontinent, so great were its yields that it saved hundreds of millions of lives from the brink of famine and its consequent ravages.

Borlaug won a lot of awards for his research, including the Nobel Peace Prize. Asked to attribute his success, he named many influences. With regard to wrestling, Borlaug said that it made him believe "I could hold my own against the best in the world."

Wrestlers, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu warriors, Muay Thai fighters, and martial artists of all backgrounds should take note. The tremendous personal development that you have achieved through martial arts need not be limited in its expression to the mat, the ring, or the dojo. Indeed the world benefited when Norman Borlaug turned his tough, determined sights against the problem of starvation. Take inspiration from his story. Find a way to give back.

The Power of Humility

Several years ago, Caol Uno, the formidable 155 lbs MMA fighter, showed up to a submission wrestling class at one of the top gyms in the US. Although many of the grapplers in the class he joined were much larger than him, he showed no trepidation in rolling with them. Shockingly, though, he got pulverized. Over and over, as he rotated through opponents, they all had their way with him. Some people present that day might have wondered if every person Caol rolled against was just so darn good that each could beat him. But more likely than not, Caol was simply allowing them to look good. He was letting himself get dominated.

Learning requires humility. It is a cliche point, yet when it comes to submission wrestling, it is all too easy to succumb to ego by trying to dominate your training partners. It may taste like victory to slap an armbar or a rear naked choke on a first time grappler, but in the long run, it hinders learning. Particularly when your training partners are weaker and less experienced, you will have very little to gain. Instead, take a lesson from Caol Uno.

You should let your training partner dominate you, especially if you are the better, more experienced grappler. Allow him to play to his greatest strength, and see if you can use your knowledge of technique to defend, escape, or reverse your vulnerable position. If you make a mistake, your partner might even tap you out. You'll feel silly and embarassed, but then if you stay humble and embrace the weaknesses in your grappling game that get exposed, you will learn something. Over time, you will be better for it.

The prologue to Caol Uno's story is that the submission wrestling class he participated in took place amid his preparation for a UFC lightweight tournament. He may have looked silly as he tapped out repeatedly in training, but he didn't look so silly when it came to the actual UFC tournament--he went undefeated. Such is the power of humility.
