The Secret to Power for Striking

Have you ever wondered why Mike Tyson hit so much harder than everyone else in the heavyweight division during his prime? Was he born with a special gift or did the famous Cus D'Amato teach him to throw such devastating punches? Or how is it that Anderson Silva, the UFC Middleweight Champion, can seemingly knock opponents out at will? Silva is certainly not an intimidating looking guy. Yet, he connects with frightening accuracy and power, causing his opponents to fall to their knees.

At Evolve, we could write a whole book on this topic. However, for brevity's sake, we will hone it down to a simple answer. We believe the answer is natural ability + excellent technique = devastating power. In other words, you need both. Yes, some people instantly hit hard even without ever learning how to throw a kick or punch properly. And yes, other people can learn how to punch or kick for 10 years and yet would not even be able to hurt a fly with their power. However, the truly great knockout artists of our time have both elements. They were born with a gift and they possess beautiful technique.

Luckily, the good news is that excellent technique will always maximize your power even if you are not born with natural ability. If you can master excellent technique from instructors who truly know what they are doing, then you will have power in your strikes. If you have natural ability and you learn from the best instructors possible, then you will inevitably have impressive power in your strikes.

Here are the basics to developing POWER in your strikes (punches, kicks, knees, and elbows):

1) Learn from the best. Knowledge is everything. If you want to learn how to cook Italian food, go to Italy. If you want to learn how to speak French, go to France. If you want to throw powerful kicks, learn Muay Thai from a Muay Thai instructor in Thailand. It is critical that you learn from elite instructors who can show you all the details of a given technique. Technique is the foundation that unleashes your power. Without it, you will never truly maximize your potential in this area. If you unknowingly pick up bad habits at an early stage of your martial arts career, then it will be very hard to undo. Knowledge is power.

2) Hips and legs. Those are the 2 magic words for developing POWER in your strikes (punches, kicks, knees, and elbows). It is not the size of your biceps or how much you can bench press or how fast you can swing your arm. The secret to developing truly devastating power in your strikes is to learn how to use your hips and legs effectively. 90% of the power in your strikes is generated from your hips and legs. If you learn how to use your hips at precise moments, you will hit harder. It is the rotational (or thrusting movement for knee strikes) torque of your hips that drives the power of strikes. So in the future, always look in the mirror and watch how your hips rotate as you throw a strike.

3) Practice at 100% power against a heavy bag every day. Assuming your technique is solid and that you really know how to use your hips and legs to generate maximum power, then you need to hit a heavy bag with full force over and over. Muay Thai fighters use heavy bags filled with sand and they throw thousands of kicks a week at full power. The reason why Muay Thai fighters kick harder than anyone on the planet is precisely because of their technique (hips and legs) and their training regimen. This type of resistance training with repetition is excellent for maximizing power.

In any case, this write-up is just a mini summary on the concept of power. We could write a whole book on this topic. For further details, please feel free to contact any of your instructors at Evolve.

The Evolve Instructor Team's Mission!

As the Evolve website states, "Evolve's mission is to empower our students to achieve a healthier, happier, and more productive life through the martial arts."

We asked a few members of the Evolve Instructor Team about what this mission means to them personally. Here is what they had to say:

"Man, our job is to change lives! This is it. This is what makes me excited. If I don't make a person's life better, then I am not doing my job. Jiu-jitsu gave me everything in my life. I love to see when a student improves in BJJ, in health, in confidence, in life, in everything. I love BJJ. This is my life. And I am passionate about helping others. I am most happy when I see that BJJ has made someone's life better. This is it! We make a better life for everyone."
-BJJ World Champion Rafael "Gordinho" Lima

"I love Evolve. Everyone at Evolve makes me so happy. Happy! I love Muay Thai and when I see people smile, it makes me smile. I want to teach Muay Thai to help people. When they can protect themselves, then I know that I have helped them. Muay Thai is good health. Muay Thai is discipline. Muay Thai can give confidence. I love to help people. I love to see my students improve in their lives. Why am I here? Man, I love Evolve. This is why I am here!"
-Daorung "Papa" Sityodtong

"A few weeks ago, we received a phone call at Evolve. The mother of one of our students wanted to speak to me. She spent the next 20 minutes thanking me profusely for changing her son's life. We didn't know it at the time, but he was going through a very difficult time and was on the verge of destroying his life. His mom said that Evolve was his savior because it had become his second family and that we had inspired him to do something with his life. I will admit that my eyes got watery at that point. After I hung up the phone, I told Gordinho that this is why we do what we do. Our job is to inspire our students to achieve greatness in their own lives. He nodded and gave me a huge smile."
-Chatri Sityodtong

"Muay Thai has given me everything in my life. I want to give everything back to everyone that I teach. This is the circle of life. This is what I believe in. I was an orphan at 7 years old. For years, I lived on the streets as a child slave to mafia. I had no hope. I had no dreams. But then I was rescued and Muay Thai came into my life. It gave me dreams and hope when I had none. I didn't even know how to dream or how to hope for a better day. Muay Thai gave me that power. I want to give all of my students the power to hope and the power to dream in their lives. With Muay Thai, they can do anything they want to do in any area of their life. Because Muay Thai gives discipline, mental strength, resilience, confidence, and good health. I am at Evolve because I love Evolve, because I love my students, because I want to give everything that was given to me."
-Muay Thai World Champion Yoddecha Sityodtong

The first non-Thai legend of Muay Thai...

Ramon Dekkers is the first non-Thai legend of Muay Thai. He is a devastating KO artist with awesome power from the 1990s. From Holland, he is one of the only non-Thais to succeed against the very best in Thailand at the Lumpinee Stadium. He is the only foreign fighter to this day to earn the complete admiration and respect from the Thais. When he was in Thailand, he trained out of the Sityodtong Gym.

Some Keys to Winning a Fight

Whether it is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, or MMA, there are some common keys to winning a fight.

The best defense is a great offense.

Whether you are sparring for fun or competing at the highest professional level, it is very important to have a great offense. The logic is simple. If you are attacking, it means that your partner is defending. Having a great offense does not mean attacking recklessly without thought. You definitely do not want to be a "dumb competitor" and just attack mindlessly. You should be attacking with combinations and rhythm. In BJJ, black belts often possess attacking combinations of 5-6 moves. In Muay Thai, it is similar. Ideally, your body and mind will have these combinations automatically. To have a great offense means that you can automatically execute 5-6 moves in a row without thought. The combinations must be reflexive and you must be able to flow into them. So how do you get good? Practice, practice, and practice. If you train the same combinations over and over, you will inherit muscle memory and your body will be able to do it automatically.

Break your opponent's rhythm.
In all combat sports, there is a thing called rhythm. You have a rhythm and your partner/opponent will have a rhythm. The key is to be able to recognize the patterns that your partner/opponent most favors. When you catch onto a particular pattern, your objective is to disturb it. This action causes your partner/opponent to get flustered. Often times, you will be able to create a mental block for a split second. A split second in Muay Thai or MMA can mean a knockout. There are many ways to break someone's rhythm. We will post how to break a person's rhythm on a future post.

Use the unexpected.
If your opponent is used to seeing you throw 1-2 punch combination followed by a low leg kick, then change it up. If you always use the armbar, triangle, omoplata combination, then change it up. The point is to have 1-2 techniques up your sleeve to surprise your opponent. It can often change the outcome of a match dramatically. The important thing is to understand that you have to SURPRISE your own rhythm. Get out of your comfort zone and do something new and crazy. You will see that your game will improve dramatically.

Have endless cardio.
Fitness is your engine. Of course, training at Evolve will give you great cardio. If you cross train across different martial arts at Evolve, your cardio will be even better. And if you work on cardio in addition to your martial arts training, your cardio will be fantastic. If you have great cardio, you will be able to attack endlessly. You will be able to break someone's rhythm more easily. You will be able to apply a surprise technique more frequently. Having great cardio is a CRITICAL ingredient to success in the martial arts.

Interview with Chatri Sityodtong

SG Pro Fight Community recently did an interview with our fearless founder, Chatri Sityodtong!

SG Pro interviews Chatri Sityodtong!

SG Pro – Fight Community brings to you the first of a series of interviews with the who’s who of the Singapore and Malaysia Mixed Martial Arts scene! For our inaugural interview, We talks to the man behind Evolve MMA, Chatri Sityodtong. First of all a little information on Evolve MMA; Based in Singapore, Evolve MMA is the number one MMA gym in Asia with world-class instructors, state-of-the-art facilities, and one of the largest selections of courses and times. Evolve MMA is the first and only MMA gym in Asia with accreditation from two of the most elite academies globally in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. Evolve is also an official Renzo Gracie Affiliate Academy. Evolve is also the largest overseas branch of the legendary Sityodtong Gym, the most respected Muay Thai gym in Thailand.
SG Pro: Chatri, first of all i would like to thank you for finding time out of your busy schedule to do this interview with SG Pro – Fight Community.
Chatri:  It is my pleasure, guys.
SG Pro: First of all, Chatri, tell us how did the idea of Evolve MMA come about? Did you just suddenly wake up one day and decide, “Hey! I am going to start an MMA gym!”?
Chatri: Martial arts has been my greatest passion in life for as long as I can remember.  I love training, fighting, and teaching. 12 years ago, I wrote my dreams in life on a piece of paper.  One of those dreams was to start a Muay Thai gym one day since I am from Thailand from the Sityodtong Gym.  As you may or may not know, Sityodtong Gym has produced the most World Champions in the history of Muay Thai.  So, as a fighter and instructor from Sityodtong Gym, I have always wanted to spread the beautiful art of Muay Thai.  As fortune would have it, I started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for fun (I am terrible at it, by the way.  But I hold a Blue Belt under Renzo Gracie) to complement my Muay Thai background.  I even competed in a couple BJJ tournaments for fun while also fighting in Muay Thai and MMA.  My passion for martial arts is what inspired me to start Evolve Mixed Martial Arts.  I truly believe in the power of martial arts to change people’s lives in a positive and meaningful way.
SG Pro: No other MMA gyms in Singapore had had the same amount of publicity that Evolve did. Look at the amount of media publicity that Evolve received; Evolve was mentioned on ESPN Sports, Channel NewsAsia, 938live Radio and Class95 Radio. Evolve was also mentioned in the Straits Times, TODAY, My Paper and many other magazines. Do you own a genie or something and she does everything for you?
Chatri: It is better to be lucky than smart as the saying goes!  I can assure you that I am not smart…
SG Pro: It’s no secret that all the media coverage of Evolve MMA has lead to a surge in the interest in Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA in Singapore. There are already a couple of MMA gyms in Singapore before the emergence of Evolve MMA, however the level of interest back then wasn’t that huge. So what are your views on the current state of MMA in Singapore?
Chatri: MMA will continue to grow as a sport in Singapore and the rest of the world.  First, it is absolutely fun.  Second, it is a fantastic workout and you can burn over 500 calories an hour doing it.  Third, it is perfect for self-defense.  Clearly, the UFC has had a lot to do with the success of MMA around the world.  The events are always electrifying.  From what I have seen so far, Singapore has a lot of potential talent for MMA!
SG Pro: Evolve MMA is the only MMA gym in Singapore to have the largest pool of world class instructors from the legendary Sityodtong Gym and the Renzo Gracie Academy. How difficult is it for you personally when people question the authenticity of the level of training at Evolve?
Chatri: Hmmm, the good news is that no one has ever questioned the authenticity of the Evolve Instructor Team or the level of training at Evolve.  I’m not sure why anyone would. You can see the bios of the Evolve Instructor Team at www.evolve-mma.com. Evolve has the largest instructor team in Asia with the most experience at over 300 years of elite world-class experience in Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, MMA, and more.  Actually, Evolve is the only MMA gym in the world with multiple World Champions in Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  At Evolve Brazil, we have professional fighters who compete in the UFC too.  For example, one of our students in Brazil, Rafael dos Anjos, just lost a very close fight to Tyson Griffin at the UFC.  As for our students in Singapore, Evolve is only 6 months old.  With time, I believe that Evolve Singapore will produce some outstanding students in the future. Every member of the Evolve Instructor Team has learned, trained, and taught at some of the top academies in the world. The talent in Singapore is unbelievable.  I would not be surprised to see a Singaporean on the world stage one day.  Nevertheless, Evolve provides excellent instruction for everyone – from a total beginner to a World Champion.  In fact, some big superstars in Muay Thai, BJJ, and MMA from around the world are planning to come train at Evolve to upgrade their skills in the near future.
SG Pro: What can we expect from Evolve MMA down the road? You have already brought in World Champions and legends like Samart Payakaroon, Rafael “Gordinho” Correa, Mauricio “Tinguinha” Mariano and the list just goes on and on.
Chatri: Well, there are a lot of great things in store for Evolve.  I can’t talk about them right now.  Let’s just say that the best is yet to come.  We have some major – and I mean, major BJJ, Muay Thai, and MMA superstars – that have expressed a desire to come to Evolve to train.  You will have to wait and see!
SG Pro: Obviously, if you talk about Evolve, the name is synonymous with MMA in Singapore. So What are the plans you have for the Evolve brand name?
Chatri: Again, I can’t talk about things just yet.  I don’t mean to be rude, but it is just that Evolve has a lot of things in the pipeline.  Our staff is unbelievable.  They are as passionate about Evolve as I am.  Many of them work all day and night!
SG Pro: I am sure that we can expect alot of other surprises from Evolve. Now let’s talk abit about you, Chatri. We know that you are the man behind Evolve MMA, that you are the one keeping things running and that you fought in over 30 fights across different disciplines (Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and MMA). Tell us more bout yourself and what makes you tick.
Chatri: My greatest passion in life is the martial arts.  I truly believe in how it can change lives for the better.  In fact, this is how I came up with the name, “Evolve” in the first place.  The technical definition of the word evolve is “to undergo continuous change, development, and progress.”  Martial arts can help a person evolve into everything he/she wants to be.  For me, martial arts is about the continuous improvement of the self – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.  If you don’t evolve as a person, you wither away.
SG Pro: You’ve rubbed shoulders with some of the best in the business, names like Renzo Gracie, Rafael “Gordinho” Correa, Antonio Braga Neto Teixeira, Samart Payakaroon, the likes. Do you have anything to share with our readers about what you learnt from these World Champions and legends?
Chatri: Yes, I’ve been lucky to have all those guys as good friends and training partners.  Hmmm, what have I learned from them?  The biggest lesson that I have learned from all those legends and World Champions is that their standards of excellence are different from the average person.  They all have the craziest and most intense desire to win.  Their love for the game is unparalleled.  They train 6-8 hours a day, but think about martial arts the rest of the hours of the day.  I love martial arts, but they live it every minute of every day.  The other interesting thing about all these guys is their humility and kindness.  You would think that they would be arrogant or something.  But they are actually all very humble.  Yes, humble…
SG Pro: And now for a little words association, I’ll name someone from Evolve MMA and you will have to describe that person in just seven words or less. Here goes nothing, Kru Yodtong Senanan.
Chatri: THE Greatest Teacher of Muay Thai.
SG Pro: Nuengpichit Sityodtong.
Chatri: Charismatic, Funny, and TECHNICAL.
SG Pro: Yoddecha Sityodtong.
Chatri: Monster KO power.
SG Pro: Daorung Sityodtong.
Chatri: Wisdom, patience, and kindness.
SG Pro: Mitch Chilson.
Chatri: Cardio machine.
SG Pro: Leandro Thomas Issa da Silva.
Chatri:  Flying Triangle.
SG Pro: Renzo Gracie.
Chatri: Original, Fearless, Generous.
SG Pro: Rafael “Gordinho” Correa de Lima.
Chatri:  Friendly, intense, perfectionist.
SG Pro: Antonio Braga Neto Teixeira.
Chatri:  Future legend.
SG Pro: Setsuma Takeda.
Chatri:  Triangle choke.
SG Pro: And last but not least, Chatri Sityodtong.
Chatri:  Still evolving…

SG Pro: That was some pretty interesting words association there. Chatri, what advice would you give to all the aspiring MMA fighters out there in Singapore and Malaysia?
Chatri: Surround yourself with good people – good friends, good training partners, and good teachers.  Never be content.  Keep learning and growing as a martial artist and as a human being.  Keep EVOLVING for the rest of your life!
SG Pro: Any parting words for our readers?
Chatri: I will leave everyone with one of my favorite quotes by Confucius, “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”  So dream big.  Love what you do.  Believe in yourself.  And may all of you be blessed with health, happiness, and success.
SG Pro: Thank you for your time, Chatri and we look forward to seeing the evolution of Mixed Martial Arts in Singapore!
*SG Pro – Fight Community would like to thank Chatri for finding time to do this interview with us. Do continuing visiting SG Pro – Fight Community for more MMA goodness!
