A Few Inspirational Quotes...

At Evolve, our motto is Achieve Greatness Within. Here are some quotes to inspire you to new heights!

"The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender"

"Winners never quit. And quitters never win"

"Courage is feeling fear in the depths of your soul, but still having the ability to keep moving forward."

"You are never really playing an opponent. You are playing yourself, your own highest standards, and when you reach your limits, that is real joy."

"Victory belongs to the most persevering."

"When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life in a manner so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice."

Get Fit Like a Professional Fighter!

At Evolve, one of our goals is to get our members fit like professional fighters in a safe, fun, and supportive environment. Most of our members do not fight and have no intention of ever doing so. However, they can still reap tremendous benefits by following the training regimen of elite professional athletes. Some of the benefits include weight loss, stress release, fat loss, cardiovascular fitness, a better physique, lower cholesterol levels, increased energy, and a feeling of rejuvenation. Of course, since our programs are taught by elite world-class instructors and World Champions, Evolve students will learn the art of self-defense and will do very well in competitions if they choose to compete. Whether your goal is to lose 10 kilos, look good for the beach, or compete professionally, Evolve Instructors know how to get you there.

A typical 60 minute Beginners Muay Thai class at Evolve is a shortened version of the typical 3 hour professional training session. Our typical 60 minute class consists of:

A 10 minute Warm Up - Skipping rope, light stretching, and/or shadow boxing
20 minutes of Technique Practice - Members get to learn new techniques and apply them
25 minutes of Pad work - Members get to hit pads and heavy bags at full power in a completely safe environment for 5-6 rounds at 3 minutes and 1 minute of rest.
5 minute cool down - Sit ups and cool down

The great thing about getting fit with Evolve is that our classes are designed for FUN, FITNESS, and SELF-DEFENCE. You will not get bored by this highly interactive, quick paced class. As your fitness level increases, the workouts become more intense as you get promoted to higher levels. Our Instructors will push you to your limits and take you to new highs. The great thing is that you will also be learning the authentic art of self-defence. Your skills will improve dramatically, especially in the first 6 months of training with our world-class instructors. If you want to read their bios, please click here.

We cannot talk about the concept of being in fight shape without talking about the regimen of a professional Muay Thai fighter. In Thailand, professional Muay Thai fighters train 6 hours a day, 6 days a week since they are the age of 6-7.

Here is the daily routine at the Sityodtong Gym in Thailand.

8am - 11am: Go for a 12km run as a warm up. Skip rope for 30 minutes without rest. Hit the heavy bag for 5-10 rounds. Then hit pads with a trainer for 5-10 rounds.

3pm-6pm: Go for an 8km run as a warm up. Skip rope for 30 minutes without rest. Hit the heavy bag for 5-10 rounds. Then hit pads with a trainer for 5-10 rounds. Spar and clinch for an hour. Do 200-300 situps while a trainer punches your stomach to build pain tolerance. Throw 200 push kicks against a wall.

At Evolve, our Muay Thai classes are geared for FUN, FITNESS, and SELF DEFENCE. That being said, we do have an invitation-only Fighters Program geared towards professional fighters and the Evolve Fight Team. During those early afternoon sessions, our training is at the professional level. If you are interested in joining those sessions, an Evolve instructor will have to evaluate your skill level and commitment before you are invited to join. To learn more, please go to our website by clicking here!

Until next time!

Best,
Team Evolve

Muay Thai Tip of the Day!

Here is a Muay Thai Tip of the Day from one of our Muay Thai Instructors at Evolve, Daorung "Papa" Sityodtong. This tip is directed at those Evolve Muay Thai students in Level 2 or higher (who have been approved for sparring classes).

"If you ever find your partner shifting his/her weight unevenly, then fire a roundhouse kick into the leg that has most of the weight on it. 9 out of 10 times, you should be able to land it solidly and cleanly if you time it correctly. The logic is simple. When your partner has his/her weight on a certain leg, his/her ability to raise that leg for a block in a timely manner is greatly reduced. This simple fact is also the reason why it is important to have an evenly weighted stance at all times. If you do not believe me, try it out lightly with a friend. It is an old Sityodtong trick that we learned at a very young age. And it works every time!"
-Daorung "Papa" Sityodtong, Trainer of World Champions with over 40 years of professional Muay Thai experience.

Should you do BJJ or Muay Thai or MMA?

At Evolve Mixed Martial Arts, we are firm believers in the value of cross training across all the major reality-based martial arts such as Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, and Boxing. Even if you are a Muay Thai purist, you will benefit greatly by doing some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Likewise, even if you are a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fanatic, you will benefit greatly by doing some Muay Thai.

Here are the major reasons:

1) Fitness: Different martial arts use different muscles at different rates of intensity. A concept in fitness is to shock the body with new movements and exercises. The logic is that the body tends to adapt very quickly to routine and you end up burning less calories by doing the same thing over and over. The body is an efficient machine and quickly figures out the easiest way to do something. By cross training though, you do not let your body get comfortable. For example, a Muay Thai workout is a highly intense cardio workout with elements of aerobic and anaerobic exercise. It really pushes your cardiovascular system. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is equally hard, but in a different way. You are constantly pushing your own weight (and someone else's). Every muscle in your body is working in a resistance type format. In Boxing, the aerobic workout is far less intense than in Muay Thai, but equally effective for getting fit. (3 minutes of Muay Thai is more taxing on the body than 3 minutes of Boxing simply because more body parts and muscles are at work). In any case, the point is that you should try to put your body in different situations. You will burn fat more effectively, you will get fitter more quickly, and you will build a better body.

2) Self Defense: If you are taking martial arts because you want to learn the art of self-defense, then you should really learn the art of self-defense. Unfortunately, 95% of martial arts that are taught around the world are ineffective in a real life situation. This is the sad truth. After 15 years of the UFC, it is now widely accepted around the world that the most effective systems are Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing, and Wrestling for real life hand-to-hand combat situations. For better or for worse, the traditional martial arts (such as Karate, Taekwondo, etc) have not done well in real life situations. (There are many logical reasons why, but it will not be addressed here). However, even in the UFC, there are limitations due to all the rules. As we all know, if you are in a situation where you need to defend yourself or your loved ones, there are no rules. So why should you train in Muay Thai if you are phenomenal at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or vice-versa? Because every martial art has its own limitations! In a self-defense situation, there are 4 primary ranges of combat: the kicking range, the punching range, the clinch range, and the ground range. The truth is that you cannot always dictate where the fight will start or end up. If you are in a crowded bar in Singapore, are you really going to jump guard and try to submit your foe with an armbar when his friends can easily gang up on you? What if someone sucker punches you? Or what if an intruder is in your home trying to strangle you? The point is that self-defense is about being prepared for ANY SITUATION and having the TOOLS to increase your odds of survival. If you are a pure Muay Thai stylist, then what happens if you and your foe accidentally fall to the ground together? If you have no tools, then you will simply be flailing away with terrible odds against you. Or if you are only a wrestler and there are 2 foes against you, what will you do? By cross training in different martial arts, you will pick up some tools to be effective in different situations.

3) Athleticism: By cross training in another martial art, you will learn more about your body and how it moves. It sounds silly, but it is true. By putting your body in unfamiliar poses and movements, you end up using different muscles and different thought processes. In doing so, you will end up becoming more in tune with your body and its capabilities. It eventually becomes self-reinforcing and you will become even better at your core martial art. The analogy we like to use is that of driving a car. If you only drive a car on a highway, how will you know how well the car turns or how well it performs on a dirt mountain or in the snow? By driving in different situations, you become more in tune with your car and you become a better driver too! At Evolve Mixed Martial Arts, we strongly encourage everyone to take classes in Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Street Self Defense, and more. It does not matter if you are a complete beginner or a seasoned professional. The benefits of cross-training are for everyone!

4) Variety and Fun: The longer you do something, the more repetitive it gets. To keep things fresh and exciting, you need variety. As they say, variety is the spice of life! And there is no better place than Singapore to exemplify that spirit with all of its diverse culture, its vast array of foods, its cosmopolitan vibe, and its sense of adventure. Quite frankly, all of the Evolve Instructors cross train in different arts because they want to have fun too! Humans have an innate curiousity. We all want to learn and to grow. We also all want to have FUN. And cross-training is the answer!

Given the benefits of cross-training, Evolve Mixed Martial Arts is committed to giving you a wide array of courses to help you evolve into everything that you can be. Evolve Mixed Martial Arts offers classes in Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Wrestling, and more. For more details on the classes, you can check our website at www.evolve-mma.com.

The point of life and the martial arts is to keep evolving and to grow continuously - physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. So here is to evolving into everything that you can be!

The Most Important Body Parts for Muay Thai, BJJ, and MMA

If you have big biceps and can lift a crazy amount of weights, does it help you for MMA, Muay Thai, and BJJ? Or what about a really huge and muscular chest?

The answer is no. It will not help your game. It will actually hurt your game.

Big muscles are NOT good for your martial arts game if you want to maximize your potential. Ask any professional Muay Thai fighter and they will tell you that one of the easiest types of opponent to fight is the really big muscle man. Big muscles are detrimental from a few angles. First, big muscles will make you more tired quickly (all else being equal). Large muscles take up a lot of blood and oxygen to keep fresh and hence put a lot of pressure on your heart. Interestingly, the human heart does not change dramatically in size relative to body size. In other words, a man weighing 120kgs will have roughly the same size heart as a 60kgs man. This fact is the very reason why lightweight fighters seem to have endless cardio in competition whereas heavyweight fighters typically run out of gas in a few rounds. Second, big muscles make you less agile and more slow. Think of how an elephant moves versus a cheetah. The same logic applies. Of course, big muscles make you more powerful. Strength is important in martial arts, but it is the least important criteria of all the major ones. For example, cardio, technique, reflex, balance, speed, and mental strength are significantly more important than physical strength.

To be very clear, lifting weights can help your game. However, it does not help an extraordinary amount. It must be done correctly in order for it to be effective too. If you lift for size and power, then you are in the wrong sport. We asked the entire team of Evolve Instructors about the most important body parts for MMA, BJJ, and Muay Thai.

The answer was unanimous.

The most important body parts for MMA, BJJ, and Muay Thai are your heart and your core. Your heart drives your entire body. If you don't have a strong heart and good cardio, you will inevitably gas out. It is the engine in your car. Treat it well and you can drive 100 miles per hour for a long time. Treat it poorly and you cannot even finish one round. The good news is that the heart is a muscle and can be developed by interval training and by training regularly at Evolve. The second most important body part is your core. Your core is made up of your stomach muscles and lower back muscles. By doing any of the courses at Evolve, you will naturally develop a stronger core. However, if you supplement it with stomach and lower back work, then you will see a big difference in your game. The core is critical to Muay Thai because all of your power in strikes (punches, kicks, knees, elbows) comes from your ability to move your hips. In BJJ, the same is true. Your ability to move swiftly and adeptly on the ground is derived directly from your ability to move your hips. The ability to move your hips comes from a strong core. MMA follows the same logic.

If you train regularly at Evolve, you will develop a stronger heart and a stronger core. Of course, you will also develop your skills in Muay Thai, BJJ, and MMA too if you take those courses. Our programs are 100% authentic. Additionally, the Evolve Instructor Team is arguably the best in Asia with over 300 years of elite world-class experience in teaching and competing. You will inevitably gain all the benefits of martial arts such as health, fitness, self-defense, mental strength, and more

How to Achieve Greatness...

If you can throw a roundhouse kick with enormous power, does it mean that you have achieved greatness? If you can execute an armbar flawlessly, is that achieving greatness? Or if you become a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, does that mean you have achieved greatness? Or maybe if you become a World Champion, then have you finally achieved greatness?

At Evolve, the answer is a resounding NO to all of the questions above.

You see, the truth is that the adventure of martial arts is really about the journey of the self. It is about maximizing everything that you are - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. In other words, it is about unlocking your potential as a human being. Don't laugh. It may sound hokey and even downright crazy. But perhaps some quotes from the Evolve Instructor Team will shed some light:

"I became an orphan at the age of 7. It is too painful to go into the details, but I only had 1 pair of shorts and a t-shirt. I had no shoes, no money, no family, no skills, no food, and no future. I was left to fend for myself. For years, I lived on the streets like a stray dog and was beaten with regularity by gangs. One day, a student of Kru Yodtong saw me getting beaten by a gang and he took pity on me. He rescued me and brought me to Kru Yodtong, the head of Sityodtong Gym. It was my introduction to Muay Thai. From that day onwards, Kru Yodtong embraced me like a son. I lived at the Sityodtong Gym. It was my home and Muay Thai became my life. It gave me discipline. It gave me courage. It taught me self-respect. It pushed me to my physical limits. It taught me to dream. It taught me to work hard. Above all, it gave me a reason to live. Without Muay Thai, I do not know where I would be today. I would probably be dead or something like that. My World Championship titles pale in comparison to everything else that Muay Thai has given me. Muay Thai has made me a better human being."
-Yoddecha Sityodtong
, Muay Thai World Champion and Evolve Instructor

"Man, jiu-jitsu gave me everything in my life. I started BJJ when I was 4 years old. BJJ taught me to respect myself and to respect others. It taught me the importance of hard work. It gave me a way to control my emotions. It gave me focus in my life. Every day, I woke up with a dream to do something with my life. I was always excited to train. BJJ kept me out of trouble. Everybody has dreams. My dream is to become the best fighter in the world, to be the UFC World Champion. BJJ gave me that dream. BJJ has given me everything that I have today. It pushes me to become a better athlete, a better son, a better friend, a better brother, a better teacher."
-Antonio Braga Neto
, BJJ World Champion and Evolve Instructor

"I've been in over 100 professional Muay Thai fights. I've been in even more street fights due to my prior jobs as a bodyguard to celebrities and as a bouncer in some of the most dangerous nightclubs in Thailand. Of course, Muay Thai gave me the ability to defend myself. I have that confidence. But, more than that, Muay Thai made me a better man. It taught me to live the life of a warrior - with honor, integrity, and courage. I laugh more. I live more. I learn more. All because of Muay Thai!"
-Daorung "Papa" Sityodtong, Muay Thai Trainer and Evolve Instructor.

"I don't drink. I don't smoke. I don't do drugs. I never have because I have too much respect for Muay Thai. Muay Thai gave me the mental strength and the focus to allow only positive things into my life. I started Muay Thai when I was 6 years old. I trained every day for 4-6 hours. I used to cry from exhaustion and I always wanted to quit. It taught me to never give up. There were so many times during training that I wanted to quit from exhaustion. But Kru Yodtong would never have allowed it. Muay Thai hardened my body, toughened mind, and strengthened my spirit. It gave me the will to win in the ring and in life."
-Nuengpichit Sityodtong
, Muay Thai World Champion and Evolve Instructor

"As a kid, I used to be reckless and wild. I was always in trouble and I caused most of it. The biggest turning point in my life was the first time I rolled on the mats in my first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class. BJJ gave me a reason to live an honorable life. I wanted to become a World Champion. So I quit drinking. I quit my reckless life. I quit causing trouble. I gave my heart, soul, and body to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. And in return, BJJ gave me so much more. It gave me good health, mental strength, emotional control, discipline, confidence, and passion."
-Brodinho Silva
, BJJ World Champion and Evolve Instructor.

"12 years ago, I was completely broke and didn't even have enough money to ride the subway. I used to eat 1 meal a day because it was all that I could afford. I lived day-to-day. And even though I had almost nothing, I was supporting my parents and younger brother because they had even less. It was a very difficult time in my life. I wanted to give up. I wanted to lay down and sleep. I was so tired. However, the lessons from Muay Thai gave me the strength to move forward: Discipline. Work ethic. Mental toughness. Confidence. Energy. Passion. Excellence. Muay Thai taught me to become a fighter in life."
-Chatri Sityodtong
, Muay Thai Fighter and Evolve Instructor

Our motto at Evolve Mixed Martial Arts is Achieve Greatness Within. Every person has a different journey in life. Every person has a different story. But, everyone has the same potential to achieve greatness within. Sadly, not everyone does. It requires patience. It requires hard work. It requires dedication. It requires honesty. It requires passion.

So what does it mean to Achieve Greatness Within?

It is not about winning or losing, succeeding or failing. It is far deeper than that. It is about your personal journey. It is about conquering your fears. It is about overcoming your weaknesses. It is about daring to dream. It is about taking risks. It is about following your heart. It is about turning bad into good. It is about living life to the fullest.

It is about how you can evolve into everything that you can be.

Ultimately, it is about the quest to unlocking your potential - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually - in every area of life. At Evolve, we passionately believe that the martial arts can help you to do that and one of the biggest goals of the Evolve Instructor Team is to help you achieve greatness within. We all have failures and disappointments. We all make mistakes. We all succumb to weaknesses. The martial arts teaches us to rise above it all and to improve ourselves continuously. This desire for continuous self-improvement is perhaps the greatest gift that martial arts bestows upon all of us. And it is the key to unlocking our potential.

Of course, the benefits of martial arts are plentiful. By training at Evolve, you can:

-Lose weight and body fat by burning over 500 calories an hour
-Get fit, healthy, and toned
-Learn the art of self-defense
-Inherit confidence, self-discipline, and mental strength
-Release stress, feel rejuvenated, and increase your energy level
-Meet different people and make lifelong friends

These benefits will help you in all areas of your life. It will give you the confidence to dream big, the mental strength to overcome tough times, the energy to make things happen, and the health to live a long life. So to that end, let us all achieve greatness within! Go Team Evolve!

More official Sityodtong Muay Thai Promotions!

Tonight, some real hard hitting Muay Thai warriors at Evolve Mixed Martial Arts received their official Sityodtong Prajieds and Certificates after dedicated and consistent training. In Thailand, it is an honor when your teacher of Muay Thai gives you your first Prajied. Professional Muay Thai fighters wear it into every fight to honor their teachers and families and to ward bad luck away. It is considered a good luck amulet and it also serves as an inspiration to fighters in the ring.

Congratulations (from left to right) to Imran Johri, Shin Shimonozo, Harish Sagar, and Benoit Dumec!!! Imran is one of our most talented students with an incredible gift for Muay Thai. He is a graceful blend of ferocious kicks, punches, knees, and elbows. Shin is a new warrior and has some wonderful kicks and has improved nicely since joining us. Harish is a big tough guy and is built like a tank. He can kick like a truck hitting a brick wall at full speed. When he first joined Evolve though, Harish could not hit very hard. Today, he has big power in most of his weapons - thanks to a big leap in his technique. Benoit is a well rounded Muay Thai student and a very fast learner. Congratulations to Imran, Shin, Harish, and Benoit!

The Sityodtong Muay Thai Instructor Team at Evolve were all present to give out the awards - Daorung Sityodtong, World Champion Yoddecha Sityodtong, Chatri Sityodtong, and World Champion Nuengpichit Sityodtong.
