The Evolve Fight Team

2 members of the Evolve Fight Team will be fighting next month in Thailand! Chatri Sityodtong and Mitch Chilson are in the final stages of preparation for their upcoming professional Muay Thai bouts in Thailand. Chatri and Mitch will be facing very tough opponents who have over 150 professional fights each.

Mitch reports, "I feel very good. My cardio is in top shape and I have been enjoying the professional training at the Evolve Fighters Program. I have never seen anything like this before in my career. To have a Muay Thai World Champion mentor me is such a rare opportunity. My Muay Thai game has improved at least 50% if not more with my training under Nuengpichit Sityodtong. I hit harder, I hit faster, and I have learned a ton of new techniques. He is a phenomenal teacher. Ýesterday, I trained for 12 rounds straight, 3 minutes a piece with 1 minute rest. I am ready for this fight."

Chatri reports, "My cardio is ramping up. It is not 100% where it should be, but I feel good at this stage of my training. The next 2 weeks will be the toughest part of training and then I will taper off for 1 week before the fight. I've been sparring hard with Yoddecha every day. It helps to have a Muay Thai World Champion as a training partner. Of course, the rest of the team is very motivating too. My opponent has more experience with 159 fights, but I should have the edge in KO power. I need to get my cardio a couple notches higher and then I will be all set for the fight."

Nuengpichit reports,"Mitch's training is going very well. He is in excellent shape. He has improved his Muay Thai dramatically in the last few weeks. Mitch has incredible natural talent and body awareness. Mitch's biggest area for improvement is his power. He is a fast and intelligent fighter, but he does not maximize his power. I think Mitch will win via points by fighting a smart, high paced chess match. His cardio is already at the elite professional level."

Yoddecha reports,"Chatri is in good shape, but we need to take his cardio to an even higher level for this fight. Technically speaking, he should be fine against his opponent despite the big difference in experience. If Chatri brings his A+ game to the fight, he will likely win by KO in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. Chatri hits very hard for his weight class and has the ability to knock people out with a single shot. My worry for Chatri is his endurance, especially in the last round of the fight. We have 3 weeks to take his cardio to another level. Either way, it will be a very close and hard fought battle."

How to Excel at MMA

Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA as it is known in most circles, is the fastest growing sport in the world. It is also certainly one of the most exciting. Whether it is a hobby or a full time profession, what is the secret of becoming a great MMA practitioner?

At Evolve, we believe it breaks down to the following:

1) Have a core art: This topic is debated quite hotly in the MMA world. Should you spend 10 years as a BJJ guy in order to become an expert and then later learn some Muay Thai? Or should you cross-train equally at the very start of your martial arts career? At Evolve, we believe that you should definitely cross-train (see the article on Cross Training). That being said, we also believe that you should have a core art. The key is to focus on one art while learning other arts at a slower pace. If you look at a UFC World Champion, Anderson Silva, you will see a Muay Thai guy first and then a BJJ Black Belt second. He even admits to being more comfortable on his feet than on the ground. Yet he is an expert at both striking and grappling. Nevertheless, his core art is Muay Thai. While it would be ideal to be 100% comfortable in both standup or the ground, most MMA practitioners will naturally gravitate to one or the other based on innate and learned qualities. A simple analogy is that some people prefer use their right hands versus their left hands and vice-versa. In today's world, you will see that most UFC Champions will have a core art even though they are also well-versed in other arts. Of course, the future may be different.

2) Be seamless: At a minimum, you need to be well-versed in Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, and Boxing. However, it is not enough to be good at those disciplines. You also need to know how to transition from one art to the other in a seamless fashion. If you look at UFC Middleweight Champion Georges St Pierres, you can see what we mean by seamless. When he fought Josh Koscheck, he took him down at will even though Koscheck was by far the more decorated wrestler. Why? While Koscheck is a phenomenal wrestler, his transition from strikes to takedowns is subpar. It is exactly this concept that cost him the fight. GSP has the remarkable ability of striking and setting up his takedowns in a seamless fashion. Meanwhile, Koscheck has a compartmentalized game. On a standalone basis, his strikes are pretty good and his wrestling is awesome. However, he does not put it together in a seamless fashion. One art does not flow into the other. The next time you watch GSP fight, watch very closely how he goes from striking to takedowns to grappling to striking, etc. GSP flows from one art to the next without blinking an eye. If you want to be a good MMA practitioner, focus on seamlessness.

3) Work on your cardio: Cardio is the engine to your whole game. If you have poor cardio, then you will not be able to maximize your potential. While it sounds simple, you really should run or do circuit training to complement your game. Alternatively, you should mix it up with other martial arts. From experience, we can tell you that Muay Thai works your cardiovascular system very differently than BJJ does. (Muay Thai takes your heart rate to very high levels for short periods whereas BJJ takes your heart rate to moderately high levels for long periods). If you do both, your heart, lungs, and oxygen transfer mechanisms will all benefit. Interval training is wonderful for your cardiovascular system. At Evolve, we like training with 3 minute rounds with 1 minute rest for Muay Thai and 5 minute rounds with 1 minute rest for BJJ.

4) Make sure that you know the 4 ranges: The 4 ranges of MMA are kicking range, punching range, clinch range, and ground range. To do well in MMA, you need to be fluent in all ranges, especially the transition game. Again, the key is to know all 4 ranges AND be able to transition smoothly between all of the ranges.

5) Always EVOLVE: This concept is probably the most important. Of course, we are biased because it is our name! All jokes aside, the best MMA practitioners are always evolving and growing. It is the Darwinian approach to MMA. It is survival of the fittest, the fastest learners, and the constant improvers. If you are a BJJ Black Belt and think that you will do fine in MMA without training in other arts, you are seriously mistaken. If you are a Muay Thai Champion and think that you do not need to know anything about the ground, then you will find yourself in for a rude awakening. In all seriousness, the reason that Evolve Mixed Martial Arts was named Evolve Mixed Martial Arts is because the only long term truth to martial arts is to EVOLVE. The game is constantly changing. Life is constantly changing. Nothing stays in one place. As human beings, we have an internal craving (conscious or subconscious) to learn, grow, evolve, and progress. Tap into that desire and make it your mission to EVOLVE for the rest of your martial arts career! It is the only way to keep yourself in touch with the realities of MMA and of life. At Evolve, one of our goals is to help you evolve into everything that you can be on a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual level!

Here is to evolving!

Classes have begun!

Classes started yesterday at Evolve Mixed Martial Arts! Our first class buzzed with a ton of energy with a room full of eager Evolve members. The Evolve Instructors were excited to work with such a fun group. Nuengpichit Sityodtong, Yoddecha Sityodtong, Chatri Sityodtong, Daorung Sityodtong, and Mitch Chilson all taught the class together. Bernard Lee, one of our Assistant Muay Thai Instructors, is in the US and will be back in a few weeks.

In other news, several Evolve Instructors gave Antonio Braga Neto, the 2008 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion, a warm welcome to Singapore. After a 37 hour flight from Brazil, Braga Neto was surprisingly still ready to go out! So it was an evening of fun in Clarke Quay with good food and lots of laughs. Braga Neto will be teaching his first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class today. As all of you know, Braga Neto is the 2008 World Champion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the Super Heavyweight division. He is also the 2008 World Champion in the No Gi Worlds in the Absolute division. He also won the Brazilian Nationals this year. Roger Gracie, Xande Ribeiro, and Braga Neto are considered the 3 hottest BJJ Black Belts in the world at the moment. Braga Neto is at Evolve to improve on his standup game by training Muay Thai under our World Champions, Nuengpichit and Yoddecha. Braga Neto will be with Evolve teaching BJJ and learning Muay Thai for a few months before heading back to Brazil.

Welcome aboard, Neto!

What does it take to be a World Champion?

Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a World Champion? When you read the newspaper about UFC World Champion BJ Penn, do you ever wonder what it takes? Are World Champions built like the rest of us? Or is there some magic ingredient? Are World Champions made or born?

Here are the responses from some of our World Champions and certified Instructors who teach at Evolve Mixed Martial Arts, the #1 MMA gym in Singapore and one of the top in Asia:

"In my career of almost 300 professional fights, I can tell you that there are 3 things that make the difference between a World Champion and an average fighter. First, it is the love of the game. I can see it in every fighter's eyes. If you truly love something, you are willing to do anything for it. You are willing to endure all odds and sacrifices. This love is the starting point of every great Champion. When I fight someone in a very tough battle, I can feel how much or how little they love it. Love is everything. Secondly, every Champion has heart. Heart is a very difficult thing to determine. You either have the heart of a Champion or you don't. It is not bravery. It is not the lack of fear. It is the ability to conquer your fears and the ability to take your body, mind, and spirit to its limits without breaking down. This concept is something that 99% of the population never get to experience. When you take your body, mind, and spirit to its limits, it is almost a zen-like peaceful state. It is almost like I am surrendering myself to something greater than myself. It is a surreal experience. Third, I think luck or fate plays a very important role. I know many fighters who were unbelievable and who had all the qualities to be a Champion, but they never made it due to bad luck. For example, one guy who trained with me since we were kids was #4 in the world. Kongpattaya Sityodtong was 1 fight away from fighting for the Lumpinee World Championship when he accidentally fractured his shin in a fight. He was never the same and eventually retired soon after. Kongpattaya was an amazing fighter who could have been Champion, but he just had bad luck. For me, when I look back at my career, I cannot believe how lucky I have been. I started when I was 6 years old with big dreams and no idea how long or hard the journey would be. I cannot tell you how many times I cried myself to sleep or how many times I wanted to quit. I trained 6 hours a day, 6 days a week for 15 years straight before I won the World Championship. And believe me, I had many low points in my career where no one believed in me anymore. But in the end, my love for Muay Thai gave me the strength to move forward."

-Nuengpichit Sityodtong, Lumpinee Muay Thai World Champion

"In BJJ, many things need to happen in order to be a World Champion. I love what I do. This is the most important thing. I work very hard. I train every day. I am mentally strong. I have the best instructors and training partners. If you train with the best, you will become the best. You see, it takes many things to make a World Champion."

-Antonio Braga Neto, 2008 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Champion

"I have grown up with Muay Thai all of my life as a student, a fighter, and a teacher. I can tell you that there is a huge difference between a World Champion and an average Muay Thai fighter. For example, a few years ago, Yoddecha was in the middle of a very tough fight with an excellent opponent. He was quite bruised and battered from the fight and I could tell that his right knee was hurting for some reason. In the 3rd round, Yoddecha threw a right kick and his knee came completely out from its socket. As you can imagine, the pain was unbearable. However, rightly or wrongly, he refused to quit. I can tell you that 99% of professional fighters would have quit on the spot. He fought the rest of the fight with one leg and won by KO eventually. I often wonder to this day about how much Yoddecha must love Muay Thai to withstand such pain. Yoddecha and I have been friends for more than 20 years ever since we started Muay Thai together at the Sityodtong Gym in Thailand. And I can tell you - he has always been special and different. Champions are born, but they must be made by other Champions. To be a Champion, you need the right genetics, you need world-class training, and you need a heart of a lion."

-Chatri Sityodtong, certified Muay Thai instructor from the legendary Sityodtong Gym

Training in Thailand

Greetings, Everyone! Here is our latest report from a few members of the official Evolve Fight Team. Chatri Sityodtong and Mitch Chilson are training at the legendary Sityodtong Gym in Pattaya, Thailand for their upcoming professional Muay Thai fights in December. Sityodtong Gym has produced the most Lumpinee Muay Thai World Champions in the history of Muay Thai in Thailand.

Mitch Chilson reports, "It is my first time at Sityodtong Gym and everyone is so nice to me. Nuengpichit Sityodtong is kindly looking after me and my training. As you probably know, he is a Lumpinee Muay Thai World Champion. So I am learning an immense amount. My cardio is in excellent shape. They tell me that I fight like an American though. But I am an American!"

As everyone on Team Evolve knows, Mitch's cardio is ALWAYS in great shape. So no surprise there! He is our Director of Strength and Conditioning and Southeast Asia's leading authority on peak athletic performance. He is also a professional Muay Thai fighter. So he practices what he preaches!

Chatri Sityodtong reports, "I had a horrible mini training session today with Yoddecha. The flight from New York and the jet lag killed my cardio for today. Without sleep in the last 24 hours, it is hard to perform at a high level. A very frustrating day. I am looking forward to training 2x a day tomorrow though!"

In other news, Yoddecha Sityodtong, Nuengpichit Sityodtong, and Daorung Sityodtong will be arriving in Singapore this Friday. Evolve Mixed Martial Arts is fortunate to have such elite World Champions and instructors teach Muay Thai at Evolve. Between Yoddecha, Nuengpichit, Chatri, and Daorung, they have a combined 100 years of Muay Thai experience.

Until next time!

Starting Out in Martial Arts...

If you are completely new to martial arts, you may find this article helpful.

Starting anything new is always a little bit of a nerve wracking, yet exhilarating experience. If you pause a moment to think about all of the "firsts" in your life, they will probably make you smile - the first time you finally rode a bicycle without training wheels, the first time you started school, the first time you made a best friend, the first time you lost an important game in high school, the first time you fell in love, the first time you succeeded at something, the first day you went to class at university, the first time you started a job...

Starting martial arts is no different. When you look back on this time in your life, you will smile. However, right now, there is always a little curiosity mixed with a sense of adventure and uncertainty. Is it safe? Will I like it? Will I be good at it? Will I belong?

Here are some guidelines to ensuring that you have an enjoyable experience in your first year of martial arts and beyond:

1) Choose the right school. You should try to find a school that fosters the right environment for learning. The culture of a school always starts at the top. If the instructors are friendly and warm, the school will emanate those qualities. Pay attention to every detail. Are the instructors passionate about what they do? Is safety the #1 priority of the school? What are the instructor backgrounds and qualifications? How do they behave as human beings and what are their values? How does the gym look and feel? Does it reflect a sense of pride and professionalism? How do the other students interact with one another as well as with instructors? Does the schedule fit with your own schedule? Is it located in a convenient location? How do you feel when you are at the school? Does it feel safe? In the end, you should trust your instincts. The best school is always the one that "feels right" to you. Be sure to visit a few schools before deciding on one. The most important thing is that you find a safe, fun, and supportive environment. You (and everyone else) will flourish in that type of environment.

2) Try to relax and enjoy the experience. Many beginners often feel very self-conscious. They somehow think that everyone is watching them and how silly they might look. You should learn to forget those feelings and try to focus on being in the moment. Listen to what the instructors tell you and mimic their movements to the best of your ability. Try to find another student who is a little bit more experienced and feel free to ask them plenty of questions. If it is the right school, then everyone will be lending a helping hand because we all were beginners at some point in our lives. Also, you should do your best not to worry about your progress (or lack of progress if that is the case). Martial arts is really a turtle's game. The person who keeps at it patiently will one day find themselves a great martial artist. Slow steady improvement is the best way to build a solid foundation.

3) Follow the rules. Every school will have its own set of rules. You should do your best to follow them since it is for your safety. If everyone follows the rules, then the classes will be safe. The rules are not meant to be annoying. They are meant to create a safe, fun, and supportive environment. Beware of schools without rules or guidelines. Accidents are waiting to happen at those schools.

4) Make sure to have the appropriate attire and equipment. It is for your safety. Also, it helps you to assimilate more quickly and feel like a part of the team.

5) Keep an open mind. Learning martial arts requires an open mind. Open your mind and absorb the lessons like a sponge. Along the same vein, you should question everything that you learn. Understand how and why a technique is useful. Don't just go through the motions. Think about each technique and how it is applied.

6) Stay committed. It usually takes a minimum of 3 months before you start really seeing the rewards. Like anything in life, your rewards in martial arts are directly proportionate to your efforts. If you give it your heart and soul, you will get much more in return. The benefits of martial arts are fitness and good health, weight and fat loss, increased muscle tone, stress reduction, increased confidence and discipline, self-defense, and life long friendships. If you stick with it, you will find yourself watching all of these benefits spill over into the other areas of your life. Invariably, the martial arts are an excellent platform to transform your life.

7) Have FUN! If you are not having fun, then something is wrong. After each class, you should feel completely spent and experience a natural high. You should feel a sense of accomplishment, knowing that you were pushed to your limits and that you learned something new. Over time, this FUN becomes almost an addiction if you stick with it. You will see your transformation physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Your confidence will soar. Your mental fortitude will rise. Your focus will sharpen. You will look good, feel good, and will be ready to conquer the world.

The Importance of Cross Training

At Evolve Mixed Martial Arts, we are firm believers in the value of cross training across all the major reality-based martial arts such as Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, and Boxing. Even if you are a Muay Thai purist, you will benefit greatly by doing some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Likewise, even if you are a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fanatic, you will benefit greatly by doing some Muay Thai.

Here are the major reasons:

1) Fitness: Different martial arts use different muscles at different rates of intensity. A concept in fitness is to shock the body with new movements and exercises. The logic is that the body tends to adapt very quickly to routine and you end up burning less calories by doing the same thing over and over. The body is an efficient machine and quickly figures out the easiest way to do something. By cross training though, you do not let your body get comfortable. For example, a Muay Thai workout is a highly intense cardio workout with elements of aerobic and anaerobic exercise. It really pushes your cardiovascular system. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is equally hard, but in a different way. You are constantly pushing your own weight (and someone else's). Every muscle in your body is working in a resistance type format. In Boxing, the aerobic workout is far less intense than in Muay Thai, but equally effective for getting fit. (3 minutes of Muay Thai is more taxing on the body than 3 minutes of Boxing simply because more body parts and muscles are at work). In any case, the point is that you should try to put your body in different situations. You will burn fat more effectively, you will get fitter more quickly, and you will build a better body.

2) Self Defense: If you are taking martial arts because you want to learn the art of self-defense, then you should really learn the art of self-defense. Unfortunately, 95% of martial arts that are taught around the world are ineffective in a real life situation. This is the sad truth. After 15 years of the UFC, it is now widely accepted around the world that the most effective systems are Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing, and Wrestling for real life hand-to-hand combat situations. For better or for worse, the traditional martial arts (such as Karate, Taekwondo, etc) have not done well in real life situations. (There are many logical reasons why, but it will not be addressed here). However, even in the UFC, there are limitations due to all the rules. As we all know, if you are in a situation where you need to defend yourself or your loved ones, there are no rules. So why should you train in Muay Thai if you are phenomenal at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or vice-versa? Because every martial art has its own limitations! In a self-defense situation, there are 4 primary ranges of combat: the kicking range, the punching range, the clinch range, and the ground range. The truth is that you cannot always dictate where the fight will start or end up. If you are in a crowded bar in Singapore, are you really going to jump guard and try to submit your foe with an armbar when his friends can easily gang up on you? What if someone sucker punches you? Or what if an intruder is in your home trying to strangle you? The point is that self-defense is about being prepared for ANY SITUATION and having the TOOLS to increase your odds of survival. If you are a pure Muay Thai stylist, then what happens if you and your foe accidentally fall to the ground together? If you have no tools, then you will simply be flailing away with terrible odds against you. Or if you are only a wrestler and there are 2 foes against you, what will you do? By cross training in different martial arts, you will pick up some tools to be effective in different situations.

3) Athleticism: By cross training in another martial art, you will learn more about your body and how it moves. It sounds silly, but it is true. By putting your body in unfamiliar poses and movements, you end up using different muscles and different thought processes. In doing so, you will end up becoming more in tune with your body and its capabilities. It eventually becomes self-reinforcing and you will become even better at your core martial art. The analogy we like to use is that of driving a car. If you only drive a car on a highway, how will you know how well the car turns or how well it performs on a dirt mountain or in the snow? By driving in different situations, you become more in tune with your car and you become a better driver too! At Evolve Mixed Martial Arts, we strongly encourage everyone to take classes in Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Street Self Defense, and more. It does not matter if you are a complete beginner or a seasoned professional. The benefits of cross-training are for everyone!

4) Variety and Fun: The longer you do something, the more repetitive it gets. To keep things fresh and exciting, you need variety. As they say, variety is the spice of life! And there is no better place than Singapore to exemplify that spirit with all of its diverse culture, its vast array of foods, its cosmopolitan vibe, and its sense of adventure. Quite frankly, all of the Evolve Instructors cross train in different arts because they want to have fun too! Humans have an innate curiousity. We all want to learn and to grow. We also all want to have FUN. And cross-training is the answer!

Given the benefits of cross-training, Evolve Mixed Martial Arts is committed to giving you a wide array of courses to help you evolve into everything that you can be. Evolve Mixed Martial Arts offers classes in Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Wrestling, and more. For more details on the classes, you can check our website at www.evolve-mma.com.

The point of life and the martial arts is to keep evolving and to grow continuously - physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. So here is to evolving into everything that you can be!

Get Fit like a Professional Fighter!

At Evolve, one of our goals is to get our members fit like professional fighters in a safe, fun, and supportive environment. Most of our members do not fight and have no intention of ever doing so. However, they can still reap tremendous benefits by following the training regimen of elite professional athletes. Some of the benefits include weight loss, stress release, fat loss, cardiovascular fitness, a better physique, lower cholesterol levels, increased energy, and a feeling of rejuvenation.

A typical 60 minute Muay Thai class at Evolve is a shortened version of the typical 3 hour professional training session. Our typical 60 minute class consists of:

A 10 minute Warm Up - Skipping rope and/or shadow boxing
20 minutes of Technique Practice - Members get to learn new techniques and apply them
25 minutes of Pad work - Members get to hit pads and heavy bags at full power in a completely safe environment for 5 rounds at 3 minutes a piece.
5 minute cool down - A light stretch

The great thing about getting fit with Evolve is that our classes are designed for FUN and FITNESS. You will not get bored by this highly interactive, quick paced class. As your fitness level increases, the workouts become more intense. Our Instructors will push you to your limits and take you to new highs. The great thing is that you will also be learning the art of self-defence. Your skills will improve dramatically, especially in the first 6 months of training with our world-class instructors. You can read their bios on our website at www.evolve-mma.com.

We cannot talk about the concept of being in fight shape without talking about the regimen of a professional Muay Thai fighter. Professional Muay Thai fighters train 6 hours a day, 6 days a week since they are the age of 6-7.

Here is the daily routine at the Sityodtong Gym in Thailand.

8am - 11am: Go for a 12km run as a warm up. Skip rope for 30 minutes straight. Hit the heavy bag for 10 rounds. Then hit pads with a trainer for 10 rounds. Spar for an hour.

3pm-6pm: Go for an 8km run as a warm up. Skip rope for 30 minutes straight. Hit the heavy bag for 10 rounds. Then hit pads with a trainer for 10 rounds. Spar for an hour. Do 200-300 situps while a trainer punches your stomach to build pain tolerance. Throw 200 push kicks against a wall.

At Evolve, our Muay Thai classes are geared for FUN and FITNESS. That being said, we do have an invitation-only Fighters Program geared towards professional fighters and the Evolve Fight Team. During those early afternoon sessions, our training is at the professional level. If you are interested in joining those sessions, an Evolve instructor will have to evaluate your skill level and commitment before you are invited to join. To learn more, please go to our website at www.evolve-mma.com!

Until next time!

The Key to Powerful Strikes

Have you ever wondered why Mike Tyson hit so much harder than everyone else in the heavyweight division during his prime? Was he born with a special gift or did the famous Cus D'Amato teach him to throw such devastating punches? Or how is it that Anderson Silva, the UFC Middleweight Champion, can seemingly knock opponents out at will? Silva is certainly not an intimidating looking guy. Yet, he connects with frightening accuracy and power, causing his opponents to fall to their knees.

At Evolve, we could write a whole book on this topic. However, for brevity's sake, we will hone it down to a simple answer. We believe the answer is natural ability + excellent technique = devastating power. In other words, you need both. Yes, some people instantly hit hard even without ever learning how to throw a kick or punch properly. And yes, other people can learn how to punch or kick for 10 years and yet would not even be able to hurt a fly with their power. However, the truly great knockout artists of our time have both elements. They were born with a gift and they possess beautiful technique.

Luckily, the good news is that excellent technique will always maximize your power even if you are not born with natural ability. If you can master excellent technique from instructors who truly know what they are doing, then you will have power in your strikes. If you have natural ability and you learn from the best instructors possible, then you will inevitably have impressive power in your strikes.

Here are the basics to developing POWER in your strikes (punches, kicks, knees, and elbows):

1) Learn from the best. Knowledge is everything. If you want to learn how to cook Italian food, go to Italy. If you want to learn how to speak French, go to France. If you want to throw powerful kicks, learn Muay Thai from a Muay Thai instructor in Thailand. It is critical that you learn from elite instructors who can show you all the details of a given technique. Technique is the foundation that unleashes your power. Without it, you will never truly maximize your potential in this area. If you unknowingly pick up bad habits at an early stage of your martial arts career, then it will be very hard to undo. Knowledge is power.

2) Hips and legs. Those are the 2 magic words for developing POWER in your strikes (punches, kicks, knees, and elbows). It is not the size of your biceps or how much you can bench press or how fast you can swing your arm. The secret to developing truly devastating power in your strikes is to learn how to use your hips and legs effectively. 90% of the power in your strikes is generated from your hips and legs. If you learn how to use your hips at precise moments, you will hit harder. It is the rotational (or thrusting movement for knee strikes) torque of your hips that drives the power of strikes. So in the future, always look in the mirror and watch how your hips rotate as you throw a strike.

3) Practice at 100% power against a heavy bag every day. Assuming your technique is solid and that you really know how to use your hips and legs to generate maximum power, then you need to hit a heavy bag with full force over and over. Muay Thai fighters use heavy bags filled with sand and they throw thousands of kicks a week at full power. The reason why Muay Thai fighters kick harder than anyone on the planet is precisely because of their technique (hips and legs) and their training regimen. This type of resistance training with repetition is excellent for maximizing power.

In any case, this write-up is just a mini summary on the concept of power. We could write a whole book on this topic. For further details, please feel free to contact any of your instructors at Evolve. You can go to www.evolve-mma.com for our contact info.

Evolve Mixed Martial Arts

Day 1! The Evolve Blog is here to chronicle the adventures and musings of the entire team of fighters, instructors, students, staff, and fans at Evolve Mixed Martial Arts in Singapore!

Chatri Sityodtong, one of the Muay Thai instructors at Evolve and another member of the official Evolve Fight Team, reports that his training for his next professional Muay Thai fight in Thailand is going well. Chatri writes, "I am ramping up into the hard core part of my training since the fight is now 6 weeks away. I just got back from an amazing training session although I am nursing a couple minor injuries. Right now, it is important for me to stay healthy so that I can give 100% to every training session ahead of the fight."

Today, we received an email about the Evolve tagline: "Achieve Greatness Within." To answer the question, we believe that everyone has the potential to "achieve greatness within." We all have the ability to do so. But not everyone does. It requires love. It requires dedication. It requires hard work. It requires honesty. Like martial arts, a key aspect of living life to the fullest is the ability to improve oneself continuously. We all make mistakes. We all succumb to weaknesses. We all have failures and disappointments. However, we also all have a choice to take those setbacks and turn them into something positive. So what is "achieving greatness within?" It is not about winning or losing, succeeding or failing. It is far deeper than that. It is about conquering your fears. It is about overcoming your weaknesses. It is about turning defeat into victory. It is about daring to dream. It is about following your heart. It is about achieving inner peace - your way. Because life and martial arts are really journeys of the self and how you can evolve into everything that you can be. So to that end, let us all achieve greatness within!

All of us at Evolve are busy working on the launch of our new gym. Until next time!

Best,
